A telemedicine demonstration was held at the Broxton-Mary Hayes Elementary School PTO meeting Thursday night, October 16. Amy Beach, LPN, Telemedicine Coordinator, and Sandra SImmons, LPN, School Nurse, were on hand to demonstrate a telemedicine exam and answer questions. Telemedicine is the use of telecommunications and information technologies to connect patients and doctors regardless of their physical locations. Every school clinic is equipped with a telemedicine unit giving students and staff access to primary and specialty care without having to leave their campus. Banks and financial institutions across Georgia will be celebrating Georgia Peanut Bank Week, Oct. 18-25, 2014. Financial institutions in communities across the state are saluting peanut farmers’ contributions to the state and local economy during this weeklong event. Officials with the Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit announced Friday an array of arrests that have occurred throughout the month of October. On October 6, Douglas Police Department – Coffee County Sheriff’s Office H.E.A.T. officers initiated a traffic stop on Westgreen Rd at Farrar Lane on a vehicle occupied by Corey Vernon Merritt. During the traffic stop, officers located a package of methamphetamine; officers contacted the Douglas – Coffee Drug Unit. DCDU detectives arrested Merritt for possession of methamphetamine. This past week, with heightened attention on the Ebola virus threatening the United States, system directors and administrators reviewed precautionary actions reinforcing healthy habits for continued safety as it relates to students and staff. As Ebola scares crop up around the country, hospitals nationwide including Coffee Regional Medical Center are preparing for what to do if they find themselves face-to-face with the deadly virus. South Georgia State College has realized a slight increase in its enrollment for the fall 2014 semester. According to SGSC’s enrollment services department, the head count for fall 2014 is 2,611 students, besting fall 2013’s head count of 2,572, for a 1.5 percent increase. The student body boasts students from 344 high schools, 106 Georgia counties, 27 other states, and 10 foreign countries. College officials attribute the increase to multiple factors, but it is primarily due to the expansion of the college’s dual enrollment program, increased marketing efforts, and the launch of a second bachelor’s degree.
