Mrs. Smith was born November 29, 1936 to the late Carl Allen and the late Amanda Lawson Allen. Sometimes the lights are on but nobody’s supposed to be home. That was the case on May 29 around 3:30 a.m. when a Douglas police officer found Jerry Campbell, 44, inside the city’s old water department building on South Pearl Avenue. Campbell appeared to be living inside the building, according to the incident report. The report states that while on patrol early that morning, an officer saw a light on inside the building. Eugene Ates was born on February 5, 1946, to the late Alex Green and Rosa Bell Cutler-Ates. Eugene graduated from George Washington Carver High School System. He furthered his educated at college. Eugene became a member of Gaines Chapel AME Church on December 18, 1983, under the Leadership of Reverend L.T. Tolson, where he received spiritual guidance and devoted his spiritual life.
