Wheeler Park, one of the most beloved parks in the city, is on the verge of reopening. After being heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene in September 2024, work crews are making progress in restoring the park. While there are some changes to the park due to the hurricane’s devastation, it is evolving into an even better space for families to enjoy and create lasting memories. Cleanup is expected to be completed by mid-September and then the park should reopen. The South Georgia State College soccer team kicked off its 2025-26 season in dominant fashion, securing a 4-0 conference road victory over Georgia Military College to start with 1-0 overall (1-0 in conference play). Sunday night just before 8 p.m., a Coffee County sheriff’s deputy stopped a City of Pearson work truck that had been the object of an ongoing illegal drug investigation. The stop took place on the east side of Douglas near the intersection of Highway 158 east and the bypass. Ultimately, the driver of the vehicle, identified as Marcus Moore, was released without being charged. But there’s more to the story. The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office has charged Linda Fay Steedley-Crews, age 44, of Coffee County, with violating the state’s sex offender registry requirements. Steedley-Crews, who had previously registered in Coffee County as homeless, was found residing in an outbuilding at a church property without notifying authorities of her change in residence. Under OCGA 42-1-12(n), registered sex offenders are required to report in person at least 72 hours prior to any change of address. Investigators determined that Steedley failed to comply with this requirement and provided false information regarding her residence. She was arrested and transported to the Coffee County Jail. Coffee County Farm Bureau (CHHCFB) Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) Chairman Walt Pridgen won the 2025 Georgia Farm Bureau YF&R Achievement Award. The award recognizes young farmers and ranchers who earn most of their income from production agriculture.
