The Douglas Police Department will be stepping up proactive patrols and proactive enforcement throughout the city due to a recent increase in unnecessary and inexcusable gun-related incidents. On April 17, 2022 officers with the Douglas Police Department were in the area of the George Washington Carver Shopping Center due to large crowds gathering for an impromptu Freaknik after-party. A suspected methamphetamine dealer is behind bars following an intensive investigation conducted by the Coffee County Drug Unit (CCDU). CCDU detectives conducted a controlled narcotics purchase of suspected methamphetamine on May 4, 2022, from a female identified as Veronica Maldonado. Further investigation into Maldonado revealed that the suspect had been staying at a residence inside the city limits of Broxton. A search warrant was obtained for the home, where CCDU detectives and officers with the Broxton Police Department uncovered two kilograms of methamphetamine valued at approximately $31,500. The Coffee County Drug Unit announces the following recent drug-related arrests: April 18 – The CCDU located an individual identified as Travis Bennett, who was wanted on outstanding drug charges from a previous case in which he led deputies on a vehicle pursuit. Bennett was also wanted on numerous other criminal warrants on charges that included failing to appear in court, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, and probation violations. Siegfried Sidney Eder, primarily known as Buddy, was born on September 19, 1965, in Chicago, IL, to the late Siegfried Joseph Eder and Velma Stewart Eder. He was the youngest of five children. Buddy attended Coffee High School in Douglas, Georgia, and in 1986, he enlisted in the United States Army. Shortly after basic training, he was discharged due to medical issues. Even at a young age, Buddy enjoyed riding his bike, fishing, hunting, working with his hands, and other various outdoor activities that very well continued into his adulthood. Mr. Meeks was born December 23, 1989 to Jimmy Darrel Meeks and Rhonda Michelle Hutchison Meeks. He was preceded in death by both of his maternal grandfathers: Ronald Bennett and Bill Hutchison. The City of Douglas Fire Department will begin testing fire hydrants on Monday, May 16, 2022, through Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Hydrant testing will start at 8:30 p.m. each night, when there is minimum traffic, and continue until 4:00 a.m. each morning. The area of Douglas that will be tested is everything South of Ward Street. During hydrant testing, the water may become rusty or cloudy and customers should allow faucets to run until the water is clear.
