Mr. Arthur Jordan McCallum, age 88 of Broxton, GA, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Tift Health and Rehab Nursing Home in Tifton, GA following an extended illness. Mr. McCallum was born July 13, 1933 to the late James Jordan McCallum and the late Celie Lott McCallum. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Gwendolyn Kirkland McCallum, a daughter: Martha Lynn McCallum Atkinson and a granddaughter: Jaime Ott. The Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association has selected South Georgia State College’s Jayce Moore as the Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Moore, a 6’3″ sophomore from Douglas Ga., averaged 16 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.6 steals, 1.3 blocks, and four assists in last week’s games against North Florida Prep, South Georgia Tech, and Gordon State. A second half scoring run by South Georgia State College broke open a close game against the Gordon State Highlanders and lifted the Hawks (12-4, 1-1) to a 70-51 win Saturday afternoon. In 2020, the City of Douglas was designated as a RURAL Zone by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. Downtown businesses that are located within the RURAL Zone may qualify for tax credits relating to property purchase, rehabilitation costs, and job creation.
