A federal judge in Brooklyn today sentenced two men for trafficking protected birds and eggs into the United States in violation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Dr. John Waldrop of Cataula, Georgia, was ordered to pay a $900,000 fine — one of the largest-ever for an ESA case — and serve three years of probation. Toney Jones of Eufala, Alabama, was sentenced to six months of probation. Waldrop pleaded guilty in August 2024 to conspiracy to smuggle wildlife and ESA violations, while Jones pleaded guilty to an ESA charge. Eugene “Gene” Carver, age 88, of Barnesville, GA, passed away on Saturday, April 5th, 2025, at Upson Regional Medical Center. He was born in Coffee County Georgia in 1936 to Lawton and Pearl Carver. After attending Coffee County High School, he joined the U.S. Army. After his time in the army, he began a long and very successful career in the insurance business. A convicted child molester is in custody after probation officers allegedly found pornography on his phone during a routine search. Sean Michael Fulton, 34, from Douglas, is a registered sex offender who was arrested and taken into custody on April 4, 2025, for allegedly violating his probation. Fulton was previously convicted of child molestation in March 2011. Earlier this week, during a routine search by probation officers from the Department Community Supervision, Fulton was allegedly found with pornography on his cell phone. SFC Howard Edward Laney, Jr., US Army, Ret., age 71, passed away suddenly, Sunday morning at Coffee Regional Medical Center. Howard was born March 23, 1954, in Orlando, Florida, to the late Howard Edward Laney, Sr. and the late Jane Marie Wise Laney.  He was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he retired after 20 years of honorable service with the rank of Sergeant First Class.  During his military career SFC Laney was a Combat Engineer serving during the Persian Gulf War/Operation Desert Storm.  Following his retirement he returned to his home and family in Willacoochee, Georgia,…

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and South Georgia State College (SGSC) have signed an articulation agreement that benefits students for years to come.
