Satilla Riverkeeper and a team of dedicated volunteers conduct water quality sampling at 10 public landings on the Satilla River Water Trail. During the summer months, water quality samples are taken every two weeks. The most recent testing took place on Wednesday, September 16. One of the parameters volunteers test is bacteria. The concentration of Escherichia coli (E. coli), a species of coliform bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract and feces of mammals, can be an indicator of the presence of other harmful bacteria or pathogens in the water. The inaugural Satilla Marine Bass Classic is slated to be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, benefiting the South Georgia State College men’s basketball program. Participants for the event will be casting for a 1st place prize of $1,000, 2nd place prize of $750 or 3rd place prize of $500. In addition, a $500 prize for the biggest fish will be awarded. The payoffs will be based on a minimum of 100 boats entered in the tournament. The family of Chris and Frances Trowell recently endowed a scholarship in their honor. This investment through the South Georgia State College Foundation will provide ongoing support for students pursuing their educational goals at SGSC beyond their freshman year. The Trowells’ children recognized that this scholarship is an ideal way to both celebrate and continue the contributions of these life-long educators. Mr. and Mrs. Trowell taught thousands of students throughout their careers. They moved to Douglas in 1957 to teach at Coffee County High School and were married the following summer. The Coffee Lady Trojans won three out of four last week, setting up a showdown with Wayne County this week that potentially decide the region championship. Two of Coffee’s wins were against region opponents. The Lady Trojans were on the road Monday losing 4-2 to Brantley County in a non-region game. On September 5, 2020, Coffee County deputies were dispatched to a possible child abuse case. The case was turned over to Coffee County Criminal Investigations Detectives for further investigation. As a result of that investigation John McIver Jr., 66, of Broxton, was charged with two counts of Cruelty to Children. McIver was released on bond on September 8,2020.

On September 3, 2020, the Coffee County Drug Unit assisted by the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Department of Corrections arrested Robert Lee Poke, 35, in Douglas for outstanding warrants from Coffee County for Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession a Scheduled III Controlled Substance. Poke was located at the Miami Motel in Pearson. He was taken into custody and transported to the Coffee County Jail. His first appearance bond was denied and Poke remains in custody of the Coffee County Jail.

On September 8, 2020 Coffee County drug detectives executed a search warrant at 550 Youngie Fussell Road, in Ambrose. This search warrant culminated from an investigation that an individual at the location was involved in the manufacturing of marijuana as well as in the sale of methamphetamine, ecstasy, and the sale of other controlled narcotics. As a result of the search of this location detectives located suspected marijuana plants that were growing on the property as well as packaged marijuana, quantities of suspected methamphetamine, suspected Alprazolam, suspected ecstasy. On September 8, 2020, Coffee County drug detectives received information from an employee with the Ware County Sheriff’s Office that James Ervin Thomas, 36, was in the Coffee County area and had an active warrant. Detectives were also informed that Thomas was on active probation. Detectives were able to locate Thomas at the rear parking lot of the Fountain Inn, located at 1007 South Peterson Ave. While the warrant was being confirmed detectives searched Thomas’s person. On September 4, 2020 Coffee County deputies were dispatched to 112 Country Acres Road about a theft. Upon arrival deputies contacted the victim who stated that someone had taking his home-made 18 ft. blueberry trailer off his property sometime in June. The case was turned over the Criminal Investigation Division for further investigation. As a result of that investigation some parts of the trailer were recovered.
