Victor Lamar “Skeeter” Cady, age 64, of Douglas, Georgia passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Coffee Regional Medical Center. Skeeter was born on July 2, 1956 in Irwin County, Georgia the son of Randolph Cady and the late Odessa McNeese Cady. Skeeter worked as an electrician technician with Hill Electric and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marshall Cady and Sidney C. Cady. Teresa Talbert Toledo, age 56, of Douglas, GA passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at her residence. Mrs. Toledo was born on February 24, 1966 in Coffee County, Georgia the daughter of the late Darrell Talbert and Laura Harper Jowers. Mrs. Toledo was a homemaker and of the Christian faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Cooper. A Liberty County man will spend more than 12 years in federal prison for persuading a 12-year-old child to engage in sexual activity. The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation that led to the arrest. Casey Austin Desmuke, 31, of Hinesville, was sentenced to 151 months in federal prison by U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood after pleading guilty to one count of Coercion and Enticement, said Bobby L. Christine, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. Desmuke also must pay $50,000 in restitution, and after completion of his prison term must serve 10 years…
The Coffee County School System’s Finance Department was recently awarded the Award of Distinction for Excellent Financial Reporting by the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts. It was the third time the department has received this award. This award was established to recognize excellence in financial reporting and controls. A total of 371 South Georgia State College students have earned a spot on the Summer 2020 Academic Honors List, according to an announcement today by Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Robert Page. Nineteen students earned a spot on the President’s List, 36 on the Dean’s List, and 316 on the Academic Honors List. AmeriCorps is a federally funded national service program modeled after the Peace Corps. For more information: www.nationalservice.gov. This is a temporary, national service position, not a traditional employment position. A one-year commitment is required. AmeriCorps State members provide positive 4-H youth development programming under the direction of the County Extension Agent. Satilla Riverkeeper and a team of dedicated volunteers conduct water quality sampling at 10 public landings on the Satilla River Water Trail. During the summer months, water quality samples are taken every two weeks. The most recent testing took place on Monday, August 24th. One of the parameters volunteers test is bacteria. The concentration of Escherichia coli (E. coli), a species of coliform bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract and feces of mammals, can be an indicator of the presence of other harmful bacteria or pathogens in the water.
