At the 16th annual Regents’ Scholarship Gala hosted by the University System of Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp presented the Elridge McMillan Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Wayne Clough, President Emeritus of Georgia Tech and former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, for his extraordinary leadership and service to public higher education. This award is the highest honor the USG Foundation bestows. Along with this notable recognition is a scholarship award for students from a USG institution. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and Herzing University have signed an articulation that will yield big benefits for Wiregrass RN graduates. Students from Wiregrass’ RN program (Associate of Science in Nursing) will have the opportunity to enroll in Herzing University upon completion of their Associates of Science in Nursing from Wiregrass, and begin work toward their Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing online. Admission requirements to enter Wiregrass Georgia Technical College have been made a little easier in the wake of the nation’s COVID-19 pandemic. The Technical College System of Georgia has provided all TCSG colleges the leeway to admit students for summer semester using a variety of methods that do not include placement testing (use of Accuplacer) or the submission of ACT or SAT scores as well as the ability to accept unofficial transcripts. That being said, Georgia 4-H has also had to cancel or postpone many of our 4-H events such as target sports competitions, poultry judging contests, Junior and Senior 4-H Spring Conferences, and so on. Mr. James Arlin Simmons, Sr. age 76 of Nicholls, passed away early Friday morning, March 27, 2020 at Life Care Center in Fitzgerald following an extended illness. Mr. Simmons was born February 1, 1946 to the late William Simmons and the late Cassie Spell Simmons. Mr. Simmons had been employed in the pulpwood business for many years. Ms. Quinette Day Adams, age 86 of Douglas, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 28, 2020 at Coffee Regional Medical Center following a short illness. Ms. Adams was born July 28, 1933 to the late Mary Ovilla Day. Other than her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Adams. Officers with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office have made several theft arrests recently, ranging from entering autos to theft of cattle. On March 25, deputies responded to the area of Cherokee Hills Subdivision in reference to several entering autos. After an investigation, officers arrested Ricardo Curtis, 20, and Dejon Fussell, 19, and charged them with entering an auto. Much of the property taken was located and recovered.
