Coffee High School senior Ashni Patel won American Legion Post 515’s speech contest Friday at Citizens Christian Academy. She was one of three contestants who participated in the contest. The contest consisted of an eight- to ten-minute oration, developed by each contestant based on his or her knowledge and understanding of the Constitution as well as personal experience. After the initial speech, each contestant delivered a second three to five minute speech selected by a panel of judges from a list of published assigned topic. That caring spirit is exactly what motivated Sara Pleasants Burdette, a Wiregrass graduate, to pursue her Nurse Practitioner Degree. Jr/Sr District Project Achievement (DPA) for our Junior (7th and 8th grade) and Senior (9th-12th grade) 4-H members is this weekend. We have a great group of 4-H’ers competing. They will be competing against 4-H members from the 39 counties in southeast Georgia. We will travel to Rock Eagle on Friday, February 7, and return on Sunday, February 9. 4-H members who are running for the Southeast District Junior and Senior Board of Directors will campaign during the weekend. Commissioner Edwin Taylor received GMA’s Certificate of Achievement from the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute at the Georgia Cities United Summit in Atlanta last week. To receive a Certificate of Achievement, a city official must complete a minimum of 72 units of credit, including at least 36 hours from a list of required courses. The training program consists of a series of more than 60 courses. Students on the Coffee Campus of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College learned at a special scholarship event that their hard work is paying off. Thanks to the generous donation of friends and supporters of the college, three students were awarded scholarships that will help pay for tuition, fees, books, and/or supplies needed for their programs. South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team managed to overcome a second half surge by Albany Tech Wednesday night to defeat the Titans 79-62. Big scoring runs defined the game with the Hawks (19-3, 6-2) eventually pulling away in the second half. SGSC broke a 16-16 tie in the first half and outscored the Titans 30-12 over the final 10 minutes to take a 46-28 lead into the locker room. Mr. Willie Jacob “Jake” Wright, age 82 of Douglas, passed away on January 29, 2020, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Wright was born September 27, 1937 to the late William C. “Bill” Wright and the late Rev. Ola Nipper Wright. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. McQueen Wright and a daughter, Debbie R. Robinson. Mr. Wright was a native of Coffee County. He has worked as a carpenter with Coffee County Mill Works. Survivors include: Son Bobby W.
