Mr. Ralph Smith, age 72 of Douglas, passed away early Tuesday morning, December 17, 2019 at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Smith was born November 27, 1947 to the late Isaac Brown Smith and the late Betty Roxie Tanner Smith. Mr. Smith, a native of Douglas, was the owner and operator of Georgia Metals. He served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Smith attended Westside Holiness Church. Although younger 4-H’ers only have the option of going to Rock Eagle, they will have lots of options on fun things to do while at camp. On Thursday, December 12, during the monthly Board of Education meeting, the Coffee High School Band and Show Choir were recognized for their continued achievements in the Fine Arts. The high school band, under the direction of Mr. Steve Myers, recently received numerous awards through competition for their performance level and talent. This fall at the Empire Classic in Statesboro, the band earned superior ratings from every judge. The competition band performed in the silver division Class AA and again received superior ratings for each area. The Color Guard, Auxiliary, Percussion and band won Best in Class. They also placed…
Junior and senior 4-H members are encouraged to start planning now for the upcoming summer camp season. Junior 4-H Camp for 7th and 8th graders will be the week of June 22-26 at the Fortson 4-H Center near Hampton. The cost for this camp is $370 plus transportation. Junior 4-H members may also participate in Wilderness Challenge Camp (WCC) at Wahsega 4-H Center. The dates for WCC are July 6-10 and the cost is $380 plus transportation. Mrs. Jean Joiner age 7l, of Willacoochee, passed away Thursday, December 12, 20l9 at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas following an extended illness. Born May 9, l948, in Nashville, Ga., Mrs. Joiner was the daughter of the late John and Stella Harrell Luke. She had made her home in Willacoochee most of her life and was a member of Willacoochee Holiness Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and in her spare time, she enjoyed shopping and spending time with her family. She worked for many years as a seamstress in the garment industry. Alma police and other area law enforcement agencies are looking for James Mitchell Metts, 32, who escaped from the Bacon County Jail on the morning of Dec. 15, 2019. According to a press release from the Alma Police Department, Metts stole a white Audi A4 from the parking lot of an Alma convenience store. Authorities recovered the vehicle near a family member’s home near Milan in Telfair County. Metts has ties to Telfair, Coffee, and Atkinson counties. He is not considered to be armed and dangerous but authorities do ask the public to be cautious if he is seen. If…
The Georgia Department of Education has named Satilla Elementary School a 2019-2020 Reward School. The distinction of Reward School recognizes that Satilla Elementary was among the greatest five percent of Title I Schools and those who are Title I Targeting Assistance Schools by their increase in student achievement. Reward Schools also have to maintain the performance of their economically disadvantages students, students with disabilities and English learners in order to be recognized.
