The third annual Interactive Veterans Museum will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2019 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the George Washington Carver Freshman Campus Gymnasium. To honor area veterans, the Freshman Campus is using another approach. Staff have invited local veterans to share their memorabilia, experiences, and stories with students to help them understand what veterans are, what the military does beyond fighting, and to create awareness, enthusiasm and respect for the United States, armed forces, and veterans. On Thursday, October 31, 2019, the GBI’s Douglas Regional Office received a request from the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation. On Thursday, October 31, 2019, at approximately 5:15 p.m., Edward Roe, age 56, reported to the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office. While in a restricted area inside the Sheriff’s Office, Roe obtained a firearm from an office and failed to comply when instructed by a deputy to put the firearm down. Roe and the deputy fired their firearms during the altercation, which resulted in Roe’s death. No officers were injured in this incident. …
Southern Georgia posts record low unemployment in September Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that the Southern Georgia region’s unemployment rate fell in September to an all-time low. At the same time, the annual and monthly numbers for employed residents increased in September, preliminary numbers for the 18-county region showed. “Georgia had an amazing month in September,” said Butler. “More than half of our regions set a record for lowest unemployment rate ever. Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Margaret Edson will visit SGSC in November South Georgia State College’s Theatre Productions and School of Nursing will present Margaret Edson’s touching and intimate Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Wit. Mr. Richard Olen Jackson, age 72, of Axson, passed away Monday, October 28, 2019 at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas following an extended illness. A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Jackson was born August 20, 1947, son of Mr. Harley C. Quail and Ms. Nancy Alice Jackson. Coming from Sanford, Fla., he had made his home in Axson for the past five years. For many years, Mr. Jackson worked as a truck driver with Barr-Nunn Trucking. Our staff has been very busy working with about 60 Cloverleaf 4-H members trying to help them get their speeches and posters ready for competition.
