Georgia Farm Bureau accepting entries for hay contest and hay directory Georgia Farm Bureau (GFB) members who grow Bermuda grass hay are encouraged to enter the 2019 GFB Quality Hay Contest. Hay entered in the contest will be tested at a University of Georgia lab using the Relative Forage Quality (RFQ) Test, which provides an analysis of the nutritional value of the hay. Winners will be determined by the RFQ analysis. The deadline to enter is Oct. 31. Winners will be announced in December at the annual GFB Convention on Jekyll Island. The South Georgia State College women’s soccer team defeated Oxford College 2-0 on September 17 in a home match in Waycross, Ga. The two teams met once before and Oxford handed SGSC their first loss of the year by a score of 0-1 a few weeks prior. The result of this match was a different tale. The South Georgia State College cross country team finished 10th and 4th, respectively, in its first two meets of the season. If the results early in the 2019 show anything, it’s that at least three of the five teams in the GCAA are fairly equally matched. On Saturday, Sept. 7, the Hawks traveled to Middle Georgia State College in Macon for an 11-team meet. Running against a field made up primarily of four-year schools, the Hawks finished 10th overall. Row crop harvest season and sooty mold in pecans John McLemore, County Extension AgentPeanut harvest season in Coffee County began last week. Growers need to keep an eye on the moisture of peanuts being inverted. The hot and dry conditions are drying peanuts very fast compared to last year. Many of the fields inverted last week have reached the 8 to 10 percent moisture in just 3 to 4 days. The Satilla Riverkeeper is hosting the annual river-wide cleanup on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Beginning at 9 AM, volunteers will help pick up litter and trash at public boat landings and river access points from Coffee County to Glynn County. Volunteers are invited to join any of the eleven designated clean-up sites throughout the watershed. Mr. Curtis Patrick Newell, age 72 of Ambrose, passed away late Sunday night, September 8, 2019, at his residence following an extended illness.
