Mayor’s youth council names outstanding youth at monthly meeting The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) held its monthly meeting on August 15, 2019, at 6pm at City Hall and recognized three outstanding youth in the community. The council also heard presentations from the Community Foundation regarding improvements at Wheeler Park and the Ambitious Young Men (A.Y.M.) and the First Love Yourself Girls (F.L.Y.) organizations about events coming up for local youth. Wiregrass holds ribbon cutting for mobile welding lab With the enrollment in the Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Welding program on the Coffee Campus increasing, the need for more space was answered by the Technical College System of Georgia sending a Mobile Welding Lab to the campus. The mobile welding unit is outfitted with one virtual welder, six multi-process Lincoln welders, and a flux core weld, along with six complete welding tool sets. Darci Tuten recognized as systemwide teacher of the year Friday night, during the halftime festivities at the Coffee High football game, Darci Tuten, Coffee County Schools 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year, was formally recognized on the football field in front of the Trojan fans. City, county working together on Land Bank Authority The City of Douglas and Coffee County are working together to rid our community of vacant and blighted property. The Douglas-Coffee County Land Bank Authority (L.B.A.) was formed in 2016 as a five member city-county board to focus on working with neighborhoods and the community to promote property redevelopment. Georgia Code §48:4:100-112, allows the formation of Land Bank Authorities for the purpose of the redevelopment of vacant, abandoned, and tax delinquent properties. Eastside Pre-K students learn about centers The Eastside Pre-K students are adjusting well to their first year of public school. Many subjects are being implemented weekly as the students begin to follow routines and directions. The students in Ms. Barbaree’s Pre-K Class enjoyed exploring in centers. The children were allowed to self-select their center of choice and then were challenged to play along with others in that center. Working together, learning to cooperate and sharing are great skills to learn in Pre-K. It’s another GREAT day in Pre-K.

Mr. Richard Warren “Dick” Tyler, age 82 of Douglas, passed away early Thursday morning, August 29, 2019 at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Tyler was born November 25, 1936 to the late Wesley Tyler and the late Zelda Vaughn Tyler. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Earle Tyler, and a sister, Linda Gail Shivers. Mr. Tyler was a native of Tampa, Fla.
