Junior shotgun team places third in recent competition By Kevin Tatum University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service The Coffee County 4-H shotgun team traveled to Savannah for the weekend of May 25-26 to compete in the Georgia 4-H Trap, Skeet, and Sport Clays Match. The match was held at the Forest City Gun Club. Coffee 4-H had a senior 4-H team (grade 9-12) and a junior 4-H team (7th & 8th graders), both composed of four individuals, to compete in the match. Lucille W. Davis, age 86, of Douglas, passed away Thursday June 6, 2019 at Vista Park. Mrs. Davis was born on May 24, 1933 in Douglas, the daughter of the late Jessie Roberts and Emma Nipper Roberts. She worked as a cook with Shady Acres Nursing Home for eighteen years and Holt’s bakery for nineteen years and was a member of First Assembly of God in Douglas. With a focus on the South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) new strategic plan, Moving Forward, faculty and staff gathered for the 12th annual leadership retreat at Okefenokee State Park in Waycross, on May 22, 2019. Wendi Jenkins and Chuck Powell from the University System of Georgia’s Leadership and Institutional Development office facilitated the retreat and worked with participants during the day on communication, leadership and recognizing individual strengths using the Emergenetics assessment tool. Mrs. Lillie H. White, age 83, of Axson, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019 at her home in Axsonfollowing an extended illness. Survivors include:Sons Rodney White and wife Diane of Axsonand Wayne White and wife Susan of Axson; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Graveside funeral services for Mrs. White were held on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Axson Cemetery. The interment followed in Axson Cemetery. Mr. Robert L. “Buddy” Tanner, age 90, of Pearson, passed away Monday, June 3, 2019 at his home in Pearson following an extended illness. Survivors include:Wife Catherine Carter Tanner of Pearson; nephew Steven C. Tanner of Clearwater, Fla.; nieces Stephanie Jernigan of Titus, Ala., Dorothy Heathman of Seattle, Wash., and Katherine Bannebell of Seattle, Wash. Several other relatives also survive. Fire, police departments urge water safety The weather is hot, and the City of Douglas Fire Department and Police Department want to urge citizens to practice water safety. Swimming is a popular summer activity and drowning can happen quickly and suddenly. “Any source of water is a drowning hazard, especially for young children and weak swimmers,” says Fire Chief Larry Wilson. “We urge all citizens to be watchful around water and if there is an emergency, please call 911 immediately.” Citizens should understand the risks of water activities. City re-issues RFP for Martin Centre The City of Douglas has re-issued its RFP for the purchase of the Martin Centre. The city wishes for individuals or businesses that would like to purchase the historic Martin Centre to submit their bids so that the foundation that has been laid for quality theatre and cultural performances downtown may continue.
