The City of Douglas Fire Department will begin testing hydrants on Monday, May 20, 2019 and will continue through Friday, May 24, 2019. Hydrants will be tested in the Northeast section of Douglas which includes City Ward 1. Hydrant testing will start at 9:00 p.m. each night, when there is minimum traffic, and continue until 4:00 a.m. each day. During hydrant testing the water may become rusty or cloudy, if water discoloration occurs, let the water run until it runs clear. Three men were jailed recently on multiple felony charges following a violent burglary that occurred last month. On April 4, 2019, around 7:30 a.m., three men entered a residence on Otter’s Way. During the course of the burglary, one of the men encountered the homeowner and struck him several times in the head with a shotgun, which had been taken from a bedroom in the residence. SFC Earl Merritt, age 76, of Douglas, passed away on Wednesday May 1, 2019 in Savannah. Mr. Merritt was born on October 29, 1942 in Broxton, the son of the late Elmer Merritt Sr. and Gussie Peterson Merritt. He worked as a truck driver with Gold Kist and was a retired Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam War.
