The City of Douglas Fire Department will begin testing hydrants on Monday, May 20, 2019 and will continue through Friday, May 24, 2019. Hydrants will be tested in the Northeast section of Douglas which includes City Ward 1. Hydrant testing will start at 9:00 p.m. each night, when there is minimum traffic, and continue until 4:00 a.m. each day. During hydrant testing the water may become rusty or cloudy, if water discoloration occurs, let the water run until it runs clear. Three men were jailed recently on multiple felony charges following a violent burglary that occurred last month. On April 4, 2019, around 7:30 a.m., three men entered a residence on Otter’s Way. During the course of the burglary, one of the men encountered the homeowner and struck him several times in the head with a shotgun, which had been taken from a bedroom in the residence. The perpetrators left the location in a white Ford Ranger, and the victim was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center for treatment of the injuries sustained from the assault. Following an…

SFC Earl Merritt, age 76, of Douglas, passed away on Wednesday May 1, 2019 in Savannah. Mr. Merritt was born on October 29, 1942 in Broxton, the son of the late Elmer Merritt Sr. and Gussie Peterson Merritt. He worked as a truck driver with Gold Kist and was a retired Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam War. Mr. Merritt was preceded in death by two sisters, Maggie Crutchfield and Florene Watson; and two great grandchildren, Hiliegh Rose Trowell and Aiden Walker Trowell. Ms. Verneal Hall Grantham, age 74 of Broxton, passed away early Sunday morning, May 5, 2019 at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Ms. Grantham was born October 17, 1944 to the late Elmon Hall and the late Wilma Lucille Wright Hall. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marie B. Douglas native Andrew Sawyer named Southeast pecan agent By Clint Thompson CAES News The partnership between University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and the Georgia Pecan Commission yielded a new area pecan agent position for the Southeast District this year. The two entities co-funded the position that will be filled by Andrew Sawyer beginning May 1.
