Mr. Charles Edward Ladson, Jr. age 49, of Douglas, passed away, Thursday, May 16, 2019 at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas following an extended illness. Survivors include: Wife Mary Taylor Ladson of Douglas; sons Clint Carter and wife, Jasmine of Douglas and Butler McKensie Ladson of Fernadina Beach, Fla.; daughters Crystal Carter of Douglas and Amber Carter Pittman and husband, Ralph, of Waycross; brothers Mike Jewell of Pearson, Tony Jewell and wife, Sandy of Ray City and Mark Ladson of Nashville; sisters Rebecca Scott of Pearson, Sandy Hudson and husband, Jerry, of Douglas, and Chrystal Vining and husband, Brian, of Douglas; six…
Mable Fleming Corbitt, a follower of Jesus, died peacefully at the age of 98 on May 20, 2019, after a long, productive life. Mable was born November 30, 1920, in Andalusia, Ala., the seventh of nine children. She grew up in New Brockton, Ala., and finished high school in Brinson, Ga., before entering Andrew College, where she majored in Speech. After graduating, she went to Willacoochee to teach third grade in 1939. There she met Wilbur Corbitt, whose family were long-time residents of the area. Wilbur and Mable were married in 1942 in Miami, where he was working for the Army Corps of Engineers.…
SGSC summer semester registration underway Registration for summer semester at South Georgia State College is currently underway. Current/returning students who have not yet registered should schedule an appointment with their academic advisor at the “Meet Your Advisor” webpage on the SGSC website. New student onsite registration will be held at the Douglas Campus and the Waycross Campus on May 23, 2019. The first day of class for both campuses is Tuesday, May 28. Adams awarded GFB Scholarship for Agriculture Dawson Adams of Douglas is one of 12 recipients of the 2019 Georgia Farm Bureau Scholarships for Agriculture for graduating high school seniors. Adams is one of five students to receive a $3,000 scholarship. The other seven students are receiving $1,500 scholarships. The scholarships recognize and assist deserving and outstanding students pursuing college degrees in agriculture or an ag-related degree at a college in the University System of Georgia, Berry College or Emmanuel College. When the dust had settled and all was said and done on the Albany State University-West Campus on Friday, May 10, 2019, the South Georgia State College (SGSC) Hawks baseball team walked away with the title of National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XVII Division I region runner-up. After three years, the Perimeter Road widening project, which includes a new overpass on the east railroad crossing, is all but over. All lanes are expected to open Tuesday, May 21, according to a press release from the Georgia Department of Transportation. The $32.9 million project to widen and reconstruct SR 135/Douglas perimeter road has improved traffic flow and city officials are eager to see its impact on commercial development.
