Mary Jane Sumner, age 72, of Douglas, passed away on Tuesday morning March 26, 2019 at her residence following a brief illness. Mrs. Sumner was born on September 8, 1946 in Hazlehurst, the daughter of the late Sidney Disharoon and Susie Pauline Branch Disharoon. Along with her husband they owned S&S Mobile Home Supply and Salvage. Mrs. Sumner was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Sumner. Survivors include two daughters, Glorisa Vaughn (Greg) of Douglas and Bolisa E. Southerland of Yulee, Fla.; two sons, Shannon M. D.J. Johnson, 52, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 23, 2019.D.J. was born on January 9, 1967 in Douglas. He was a graduate of Nicholls High School Class of 1985. D.J. proudly joined the United States Air Force in 1988 and traveled the world serving his country. He moved to Warner Robins in 1993 and retired after 20 years of service as a Master Sergeant in 2008. Most recently, D.J. worked as an electrician on Robins Air Force Base. Mrs. Beverly Jo Davis, age 68, of Douglas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday March 31, 2019 at her residence surrounded by her family. Beverly was born on August 8, 1950 in Coffee County, the daughter of the late Paul and Louise Lott Smith, Sr. Beverly was a lifelong resident of Coffee County. As a loving wife and mother, she spent the early years of her life tending to her children and their family home. Wiregrass Tech top in Awards Count for second year Wiregrass Georgia Technical College had an overwhelming showing at the 2019 SkillsUSA State Championship in Atlanta this past weekend. The college brought back 26 gold, 23 silver, and 10 bronze medals in the skills competition among other colleges. The college medaled in 83 percent of the contests the students competed in and 67 percent of Wiregrass students who competed earned a medal. SGSC Academic Quiz Team competes at national championship The South Georgia State College Academic Quiz Team wrapped up its season recently, competing at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments’ (NAQT) Community College Championship Tournament (CCCT). The top 24 teams in the nation were invited, with SGSC earning the number 22 seed. SGSC’s team finished the two-day tournament with a record of five wins and seven losses, receiving 14th place which was considerably higher than the seeding. Jeff Ross, age 58, of Douglas, passed away on Sunday March 24, 2019 in Sparks, Georgia following an extended illness. He was born on March 26, 1960 in Tampa, Florida, the son of the late Sandra Ross Kicklighter and Carl Kenneth Kicklighter. Mr. Ross worked as a truck driver for Boatright Trucking in Alma and loved to ride his Harley, named Matilda. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Cassandra Ross.
