Joyce Marie Peterson Brown, age 80, of West Green, passed away on Friday February 1, 2019. Mrs. Brown was born on December 22, 1938 in Coffee County, the daughter of the late Eddie Peterson and Ruth Courson Peterson. She was a homemaker and a member of Lone Hill United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, E.D. Brown. Survivors include two brothers, Eddie Peterson of West Green and Wayne Peterson (Shirley) of Baxley; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Wife of Burnett “Buck” Plemmons for sixty- three years and loving mother of daughters Linda Plemmons James and Pamela Annette Plemmons Gosney. Mr. Roger Miles Burkett, age 57, of Douglas, was called to his heavenly home suddenly on Friday, February 8, 2019. Mr. Burkett was born in Douglas on August 10, 1961 to Loretta Gray Burkett and the late Roger Hamilton Burkett. Miles was a loving, friendly, outgoing, generous and hard-working man. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College will begin its first Guardian Bank Entrepreneurship Academy in February free for current Wiregrass students and alumni. The UGA Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Valdosta State University is partnering with Guardian Bank and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College to deliver six courses with 12 hours of total class time. The business topics to be discussed include: writing a business plan, money finance and accounting, marketing, human resources, and planning. Vista Park Health & Rehabilitation hosted a Virtual Dementia Tour Training for the City of Douglas Fire Department on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019 through Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019. Georgia Firefighter Recognition Day was held in Atlanta on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019. Douglas Fire Department (DFD) Fire Chief Larry Wilson, DFD Captain Brantley Anderson, and DFD Asst. Fire Chief Bryson Lott attended the Georgia Firefighters Recognition Day at the Capitol. Governor Kemp addressed the firefighters and expressed his sincere thanks for the duties that firemen perform each day while risking their lives to save others from fire in Georgia. As part of the ceremony, DFD Chief Wilson and Captain Anderson were sworn in as local fire marshals.
On Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019, Blondale Thomas, Douglas Public Information Manager and Magnolia Midlands Travel Association President Elect, and Jennifer Chilton Visitor Center and Tourism Manager, attended the Tourism, Hospitality, and Arts Day at the Capitol in Atlanta. Each year, tourism professionals from around Georgia travel to the Capitol for a day to discuss legislation that affects tourism. While at the Capitol, members of the Magnolia Midlands Travel Association met with Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan to discuss the importance of tourism and tourism dollars in local communities.
Two men are charged with burglary after proactive local churchgoers caught the criminals red-handed. Coffee County deputies responded to a report of a burglary at Cornerstone Church off Highway 32 East on Feb. 1. Victims reported someone had broken into a building on church property, stealing numerous construction-related tools and equipment valued at several thousand dollars. Not to be deterred, church members set up video cameras in the area and were able to capture images of two suspects when they returned the night of Feb. 4 for a second burglary. Coffee County sheriff’s detectives are attempting to locate 25-year-old missing person Kristian Bell. Ms. Bell was last seen around Jan. 20 in the area of Nicholls. She is described as a white female, approximately 5’04”, 143 lbs., with blonde hair and green eyes. Anyone with information on Bell’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office at (912) 384-4227 or the E-911 non-emergency line at (912) 384-7675.
