The Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) has named South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Keyshaun Street as the Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 3. Street, a 5’10” sophomore from Kingsland, averaged 19.5 points, three assists, 2.5 rebounds, and two steals in wins over Combine Academy – Atlanta (90-64) and Combine Academy – Charlotte (87-73). He is currently in the top five in the GCAA in the following categories: points per game (18.1), free throw percentage (76 percent), and total steals (27). Yesterday, a jury in Atkinson County convicted Roderick Bernard Brock in the May 2015 killing of Marlene Murray, 64, of Atkinson County. Roderick and Ansley Minkema, both of whom are from Douglas, had been arrested and charged with Murray’s murder. Minkema pled guilty and received 20 years in prison and 20 years on probation. Brock was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He was convicted on charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault (three counts), and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Coffee County sheriff’s detectives have arrested a 30-year-old man in relation to a shooting that occurred earlier this month in the Oak Park community. Deputies were dispatched to Coffee Regional Medical Center on Dec. 2, 2018, in reference to a male victim who had sustained gunshot wounds. The victim stated he had been shot by an unknown offender. Following an investigation, detectives were able to identify Reginald Recardo Powell as the assailant. Powell was apprehended Thursday, Dec. 13 by Coffee County sheriff’s detectives and officers with the Douglas Police Department. He has been charged with aggravated assault and…

South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team withstood an avalanche of three-point shots Saturday afternoon to pull away from Combine Academy Charlotte 87-73 and sweep the annual Chick-Fil-A Christmas College Classic in Waycross. The Hawks (7-5) built a 27-10 lead in the first half before Combine outscored SGSC 26-12 to trail only 39-36 at halftime. A majority of Combine’s scoring during that run came from behind the three-point line (10-for-28, 35.7 percent). Combine attempted 57 three-pointers for the game and connected on 17 of them. The South Georgia State College Hawks opened the annual Chick-Fil-A Christmas College Classic in Waycross Friday night with a 90-64 win over Combine Academy Atlanta. It was the first home game for the Hawks since Nov. 17. “It’s great to be back home in front of a home crowd,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. Combine Academy kept things close in the first half, forcing six lead changes in the first 20 minutes to only trail by ten points at halftime. Dallas Fryer of Parrott, Georgia passed away December 5, 2018 at Navicent Health in Macon, Georgia. Dallas served in the United States Army. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Fryer; and two sons, Neal Fryer and Daniel Fryer.
Elder Leroy Jackson, Sr. was born to the late Minnie Armsterd and Elijah Daughtry on May 12, 1921 in Quincey, Fla.. He attended school in Quincey and later joined the US Army and served his country in World War II. He became employed for Southern Railroad and which he retired after 45 years. He also served as deacon, pastor and presiding elder for Church of God in Unity. He was later joined in marriage to Mother Florence Carter Jackson. He leaves to mourn his devoted wife of 14 years, Mother Florence Carter Jackson. To this union came 15 children:…
