The City of Douglas and Transwaste are offering two junk drop-off days in December – Dec. 1 and Dec. 15 at the City Pole Yard located at Pearl Avenue from 8 a.m.-noon. A dumpster will be placed the City Pole Yard, located on Pearl Avenue, to offer Douglas residents a way to dispose of large, non-hazardous items and electronic items at no cost. No one will be available to help unload items. The City is not responsible for any damages that occur during unloading. NO CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL/DEBRIS or business/commercial dumping will be allowed. The Coffee Middle School Spelling Bee was held on November 28, and all the participants did a fabulous job. The top three spellers were sixth grade students. The winners were: 1st place, Jason Lai; 2nd place, Mailey Sinclair; and 3rd place, Lindan Defour. These spellers will represent CMS at the countywide spelling bee in February. Congratulations, guys!
After two rounds of interviews Nikki Hinson, a Radiologic Technology student, was named Wiregrass Georgia Technical College’s 2019 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) winner. A family tragedy first sparked Nikki’s interest in the medical field. “My mom was involved in a head-on collision which resulted in breaking most of the bones in her body”, shared Nikki. “The event was also my first look into the world of medicine as I watched doctors and techs and all sort of equipment see inside my mother’s body to diagnose and treat her.” Nikki’s mother would eventually recover and Nikki married and became…

Mr. Lyle Gordon, member of the Kiwanis Club of Douglas spoke on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the Flying Cowboy Restaurant. Mr. Gordon spoke about his month-long cross country travels along the Oregon Trail and back with his wife, Carol. He spoke about how the many books he has read over the years about the Oregon Trail inspired this trip. Everyone enjoyed his talk.
Caelan Merritt GWCFC Journalism Student Recently, the George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC) library held a book fair. The theme for the book fair was “Enchanted Forest”; there were multitudes of enticing books. The genres in the fair ranged from nature to horror. There were also various items that were available to buy. The students that attend GWCFC enjoyed the book fair, and the book fair was used to motivate and help students read. Aciena Golden of Valdosta has been chosen to represent Wiregrass Georgia Technical College as the 2019 Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) Student of the Year. EAGLE is a statewide program that recognizes and rewards excellence among students enrolled in adult education programs. The award was announced on November 19 at a reception sponsored by the Valdosta Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce and Smith Drug Company.
