With cooler weather approaching and fun fall activities taking place, the Douglas Fire Department would like to remind parents and children of some fire safety tips. Young children, preschool age and kindergartners, are more likely to start fires by playing with matches or lighters. South Georgia State College (SGSC) and the University of North Georgia (UNG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will provide the students at SGSC the opportunity to obtain a dual certification degree in elementary education and special education. Students attending SGSC will be able to complete the four-year UNG Special Education General Curriculum Elementary Education program (P-5) and qualify for teacher certification through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC). The Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) has named South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Skyler Baggs as the first Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the 2018-2019 season. Baggs, a 6’5” redshirt sophomore from Brunswick, averaged 21 points, 9.5 rebounds, four steals, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks in the Hawks’ (2-0) opening wins over American Basketball Institute (93-64) and Florida State College at Jacksonville (79-75, OT). At the Georgia Airports Association (GAA) Annual Conference at Jekyll Island, Douglas Airport Manager Howard Whidden was selected to serve on the GAA Board of Directors. The South Georgia State College swim teams had their first home meet of the season on Saturday, November 3, 2018, and won both men’s and women’s side of the competition. The men totaled 713 points to Thomas University’s 329 points. Lagrange College placed third with 301 points and Point University fourth with 244 points.
