George Russell Kight Sr., age 74, of Ambrose, passed away on Tuesday October 23, 2018 at Coffee Regional Medical Center. Mr. Kight was born on October 7, 1944 in Douglas, the son of the late George “Buck” Kight and Louise Ruis Kight. He worked as a farmer and was a member of Calvary Mission Holiness Baptist Church. Hilda Mizell Markette, age 87, of Ambrose, passed away on Friday October 19, 2018 after an extended illness. Mrs. Markette was born on June 1, 1931 in Axson, the daughter of the late Grady Glenn Mizell and Gladys Williams Mizell. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. As the traditional Halloween day quickly approaches, on Wednesday, Oct. 31, the City of Douglas Police Department urges parents and neighborhoods to use safety cautions for personal safety and especially for kids. The city asks that trick-or-treating take place between the hours of 6 pm – 9 pm. In order to minimize traffic in the golf club neighborhood, traffic will flow one-way on October 31 during trick or treating hours. The Coffee County School System won Bronze recognition at the 2018 Golden Radish Awards held at the Georgia Freight Depot. The Golden Radish Award publicly recognizes Georgia school districts for best practices in farm to school programs, such as local food procurement, exposing students to new foods through taste tests and incorporating gardening and cooking activities in curriculum. The South Georgia State College (SGSC) Hawks men’s swim team took first place in Thomasville at Thomas University, defeating the host school and Point University. The women finished second to Thomas University. The Hawks men finished in first place by amassing a total of 168 points to Thomas University’s 68 points. Thomas University’s women edged the Hawk’s women by a close score of 119 points to 105 points. Point University finished in third place on both sides of the competition.
