The Satilla Regional Library System held their Bookmark Art Contest winners’ ceremony for the winners of the Tenth Annual Bookmark Art Contest on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Douglas/Coffee County Public Library at 12:30 p.m.in the Children’s Room. Mr. Mark Cole, Director and Mrs. Julie M. Vickers, Children’s and Young Adult Librarian presented each winner with a framed certificate with their winning bookmark, a Wal-Mart gift card and copies of their bookmarks. All winners were congratulated for their artistic ability and creativity. Thank you to everyone that participated in this annual contest held by Satilla Regional Library System.

West Green Elementary Pre-K celebrated 26 years of Georgia Pre-K by inviting special guests to read to their classes. The lottery-funded Georgia Pre-K program is one of the finest in the nation. During its 26-year history, Georgia Pre-K has educated more than 1.6 million four-year-olds. This year, more than 81,000 children are enrolled in over 1,800 locations in all 159 Georgia counties. Instructors at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College have nominated 25 of their students for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) competition, according to Lydia Hubert, coordinator for the college’s GOAL program. These nominations come from the college’s four campuses: Ben Hill-Irwin, Coffee, Cook, and Valdosta, and this year the nominees include two sets of siblings. Most lawbreakers try to stay as far away from the police as possible. Perrell Jadon Kelly, 31, of Alma, isn’t like most alleged criminals. According to a press release from the Alma Police Department, Kelly was arrested on Thursday, Oct. 4, and charged with two counts of burglary second degree. Apparently, Kelly allegedly attempted to break into a marked police car while it was parked at the home of an off-duty police officer. His plan did not work out very well and he was arrested. This year, 4-H Week is October 7-13. Currently, there are approximately 1,273 4-H members in Coffee County.
