The Afterschool Alliance has announced that Bull Brown, 21st Century CLC Program Director/CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Coffee County Region, in Douglas, has been selected to serve as a 2018-2019 Afterschool Ambassador. He is one of just 15 leaders in the country who was chosen for the honor this year. Superior Court Judge Jeffrey H. “Jeff” Kight of the Waycross Judicial Circuit has been designated to serve in place of Justice Sarah H. Warren in the appeal of City of Stockbridge et al. v. Tina Lundsford et al. (S19A0087). The Supreme Court of Georgia will hear arguments in the case on Oct. 9. 2018 during its 10 am session. The appeal in this case stems from legislation signed by the governor earlier this year that takes part of the City of Stockbridge and creates the new city of Eagle’s Landing. A Coffee County man is in custody following a shooting that triggered the temporary lockdowns of two local schools Thursday morning. Around 11:30 a.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence off Ga. Hwy. 158 West in reference to a shooting. As a precautionary measure, Indian Creek Elementary School and Citizens Christian Academy were placed on lockdown. Upon arrival at the location, authorities discovered a male victim who had sustained a gunshot wound to the right foot. The Georgia Department of Transportation has notified the City of Douglas that a major paving project will be underway on Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018 on State Route 135/Perimeter Road. Two crews are scheduled to pave travel lanes on State Route135/Perimeter Road, which will require single lane closures. Paving operations are planned from the intersection of US 441 to SR 158/East Baker Highway from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018. Pilot cars, flaggers, and signs will direct motorists. The paving schedule is subject to change based on weather.…
In an effort to increase attendance, Coffee Middle School observed September as Attendance Awareness Month. Attendance matters and improves chances of students being successful in school. Research shows that students who miss 2-3 days of school each month are more likely to drop out of school. Coffee Middle School has observed the month by providing incentives to encourage student attendance. Drawings were held for weekly attendance winners as well as monthly winners. The Satilla Riverkeeper is hosting the annual river-wide cleanup on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Beginning at 9 am, volunteers will help pick up litter and trash at public boat landings and river access points. Volunteers are invited to join any of the nine designated clean-up sites throughout the watershed. This is a growing river-wide effort, and the Satilla Riverkeeper invites any interested individuals, schools, church groups, businesses, or other community groups to get involved. South Georgia State College celebrated the next chapter in the life of the 112-year-old institution September 17-21, 2018, with a week-long inauguration celebration, culminating with the installation of Dr. Ingrid Thompson-Sellers as the eighth president of the college.
