The City of Douglas is currently seeking four volunteers to fill a vacancy on the Airport Commission. Applicants must be city residents and it is preferred for applicants to have aviation knowledge or experience. Interested citizens should request an application from the City Clerk’s office at City Hall, 224 E. Bryan Street through October 22, 2018. South Georgia State College (SGSC) is one step closer to offering its Bachelor of Science in Long-Term Healthcare Management degree. With the recent approval by SGSC’s accreditation agency, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the program is anticipated to launch in the fall semester of 2019. The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents approved the degree in the spring. Sheriff Doyle Wooten’s Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2. He invites the community from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at his home, located at 1079 Ga. Connector 206 NW, Douglas. Everyone is invited to come join in the fun and fellowship. There will be horse rides, hay rides, miniature golf, jumpy house, face painting, giant sand box, and many more activities, along with hot dogs and drinks. Douglas resident Lyle Gordon is among the first recipients of Cingo’s Circle & Shield award, a program launched this year to honor people in communities who help make the world a safer place. “Cingo means to surround and secure — to protect. The Douglas Kiwanis Club Installation Banquet for year 2018-19 was held October 9, 2018, at the small social hall of the First Baptist Church. Tim Goodman, Lt. Governor, District 17, presided over the installation of officers. Sandra Spivey and Wes Abler continued on as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively, while Martin Vickers was sworn in as President for year 2018-19 and Jeannie King was sworn in as President-Elect (2019-2020). One new member, Mike Greene, was inducted by Martin Vickers and Wes Abler.

Mrs. Betty Jean Malphus Davis, age 83 of Douglas, passed away late Tuesday morning, October 9, 2018, at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Malphus was born August 27, 1935 to the late Carl Malphus and the late Elizabeth “Lizzie” Story Malphus. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Davis, Sr., a son, Anthony Davis, and four siblings, Ancil Malphus, Leroy Malphus, Marie Vickers, and Jerry Malphus. Cindy Taylor, age 61, of Douglas, passed away on Sunday October 7, 2018 at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Taylor was born on April 5, 1957 in Norfolk, Va., the daughter of the late Julian Lee Worth and Doris Norris Worth. Anna Braswell, a 2017 graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design with a Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing, won a regional student Emmy award for her original sitcom Nailed It! that she created, wrote, and produced while at SCAD. Nailed It! is a behind-the-scenes workplace comedy about a home renovation show, led by the knowledgeable, but bland, Jamie Mills. In an effort to boost ratings and to keep from being canceled, her producer brings in minor internet celebrity Stewart Bradshaw, the Hashtag Glass Guy. The pre-school students at Precious Possessions Learning Center enjoyed a visit with Mayor Tony Paulk on Friday, Oct. 5, 2018.
