Friday night lights have long been a South Georgia community event. Fall has finally arrived, though the temperatures say otherwise, and football season is in full swing. The week of Oct. 1-5 was Georgia Pre-K Week. During the week, many leaders from the community, parents, grandparents, Mrs. Tamara Morgam (principal), Mrs. Amy Vining (Assistant Principal), teachers from other grade levels, City of Douglas Director, Doyle Wooten (Sheriff) and personnel from the Board of Education visited Indian Creek Pre-K classrooms. By Kevin Tatum Students in 4th-6th grades interested in participating in Cloverleaf District Project Achievement (DPA) need to get signed up for their project and started working on it as soon as possible. Cloverleaf DPA will be held in Lyons, on Saturday, November 10. Our registration deadline is October 19. DPA is a contest where a student selects a project area, narrows down their topic, researches that topic, organizes their information, writes a five to six minute speech, prepares visual aids about that speech, practices, and goes to the contest to present their project in front of the other…
On Thursday, September 27, during the regular monthly meeting of the Coffee County Board of Education, students from all levels were recognized during the annual presentation of the system’s artwork calendar. Entering its 26th year of production, the school board recognized those students whose art was selected for display on the 2018-2019 school calendar. Kim Clayton, Director of Personnel and Public Relations, presented each student with a gift certificate from Kentucky Fried Chicken and the students received the monthly Superintendent’s Award from Dr. Leis. With the expected arrival of Hurricane Michael late Wednesday afternoon, a mandatory curfew will go into effect beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday and lasting until 6 p.m. Thursday. This includes the entire county, including Douglas, Ambrose, Broxton, and Nicholls. Businesses are also being asked to abide by the curfew. Officials urge citizens to take caution with this storm. Miles for Education is a Walmart program in which the safe miles that drivers accumulate within a certain period are added and a percentage is donated to education. The Satilla Regional Library System held their Bookmark Art Contest winners’ ceremony for the winners of the Tenth Annual Bookmark Art Contest on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Douglas/Coffee County Public Library at 12:30 p.m.in the Children’s Room. Mr. Mark Cole, Director and Mrs. Julie M. Vickers, Children’s and Young Adult Librarian presented each winner with a framed certificate with their winning bookmark, a Wal-Mart gift card and copies of their bookmarks. West Green Elementary Pre-K celebrated 26 years of Georgia Pre-K by inviting special guests to read to their classes. The lottery-funded Georgia Pre-K program is one of the finest in the nation. During its 26-year history, Georgia Pre-K has educated more than 1.6 million four-year-olds. This year, more than 81,000 children are enrolled in over 1,800 locations in all 159 Georgia counties. Studies show that Georgia Pre-K improves school readiness by helping children grow across all learning domains including math, language and literacy, and social-emotional skills.
The Douglas Downtown Merchants Association will be hosting the Hometown Harvest this year on Saturday, October 20, from 2 pm – 4 pm.
