The Douglas-Coffee County 10U All Stars won a district championship then advanced to the state tournament in Springfield, where they finished second to a very tough Vidalia squad.These young men represented Coffee County well in both the district and state tournaments. The team traveled to Waycros from June 23-25 to compete in the district tournament. They went undefeated in district competition to secure the title. Coffee defeated Liberty, Ware and Glynn County (twice). The team allowed only 14 runs in four games while outscoring their opponents 39-14. Troy C. Prescott Sr., age 73, 0f Douglas, Georgia passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Prescott was born on April 28, 1945, in Coffee County, Georgia the son of the late Emmett Prescott and Ella Mae Bazemore. He was an inspector with Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation, attended Lone Hill Methodist Church and loved the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. Douglas Police Department’s Deputy Chief, Brannen Pruette has transitioned into the role of Interim Police Chief. In May 2018, previous Police Chief Gary Casteloes was absent due to medical leave. After returning to duty from medical leave, Casteloes decided to retire at the end of June 2018. Currently, the city is exploring its different possibilities and until that process has been established, Pruette will continue in the position of Interim Police Chief.
An inmate who walked off from a work detail in December 2017 is back behind bars in Coffee County after being apprehended by Douglas-Coffee Drug Agents. Donald Dewayne Davis was working a detail at the Coffee County Courthouse on Dec. 8, 2017 when he disappeared with the aid of an accomplice. Davis was located in North Carolina shortly thereafter and arrested but again managed to get away after being released on a technicality involving his extradition back to Georgia. Satilla Regional Library System welcomed Mr. Mark Alan, Comedian and Magician, to the Douglas-Coffee County Public Library on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 11 a.m. and to the Pearson Public Library at 2:30 p.m. for his Rock n’ Roll Magic Show. The Douglas-Coffee County recreation department swim team captured their third state championship in the last five years this past weekend in Tifton. The Stingrays bested 28 teams from all over the state at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association two-day state meet. The ‘Rays amassed 656 points to Oconee County’s 474. Calhoun County swim team finished third. “We took a record high 85 swimmers to state from our district meet and the numbers worked in our favor,” stated Stingray coach Annesley Vickers.
