The City of Douglas and the Department of Labor are hosting a Job Fair and Resource Expo on Thursday, August 2, 2018, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the JD Murray Gymnasium located on the George Washington Carver Freshman Campus. All job seekers should come prepared with resume’ but no pre-registration is required to attend the job fair. Douglas Police Department’s Deputy Chief, Brannen Pruette has transitioned into the role of Interim Police Chief. In May 2018, previous Police Chief Gary Casteloes was absent due to medical leave. After returning to duty from medical leave, Casteloes decided to retire at the end of June 2018. Currently, the city is exploring its different possibilities and until that process has been established, Pruette will continue in the position of Interim Police Chief.
An inmate who walked off from a work detail in December 2017 is back behind bars in Coffee County after being apprehended by Douglas-Coffee Drug Agents. Donald Dewayne Davis was working a detail at the Coffee County Courthouse on Dec. 8, 2017 when he disappeared with the aid of an accomplice. Davis was located in North Carolina shortly thereafter and arrested but again managed to get away after being released on a technicality involving his extradition back to Georgia. Satilla Regional Library System welcomed Mr. Mark Alan, Comedian and Magician, to the Douglas-Coffee County Public Library on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 11 a.m. and to the Pearson Public Library at 2:30 p.m. for his Rock n’ Roll Magic Show. Mr. Alan had a fun comedy and rock n’ roll magic show that included various magic tricks, talking about various music and genres of books, and having a music band formed by the children. The Douglas-Coffee County recreation department swim team captured their third state championship in the last five years this past weekend in Tifton. The Stingrays bested 28 teams from all over the state at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association two-day state meet. The ‘Rays amassed 656 points to Oconee County’s 474. Calhoun County swim team finished third. “We took a record high 85 swimmers to state from our district meet and the numbers worked in our favor,” stated Stingray coach Annesley Vickers. This competition entails a 4-H member selecting a project, working on this project throughout the year, assembling a portfolio on their project work, leadership, citizenship, and other activities, researching their project in order to put together a demonstration on this topic. They will then present their demonstration at DPA at Rock Eagle. If a 4-H member wins first place or earns a sweepstakes trip in their project, they will advance to State 4-H Congress…
Southern Gold Gymnastics gymnasts were recognized by Mayor Tony Paulk and the City Commission at the Commission meeting on Thursday, July 12, 2018. The gymnasts represented Douglas and Coffee County during their trip to the AAU Gymnastic National Championship in Tampa, Florida. SGG gymnasts placed and won several categories at Nationals. The competition gymnastic team at Southern Gold Gymnastics practices over eight hours a week all year preparing for the competition. Congratulations to these remarkable young ladies and coach!
At the City Commission meeting on Thursday, July 12, 2018, Mayor Tony Paulk and the City Commission recognized the Coffee County Weightlifting team for qualifying and participating in Olympic Weightlifting Nationals. The weightlifting team represented Douglas and Coffee County at the National Youth Weightlifting Championship in Grand Rapids, Michigan in June 2018. Congratulations to these outstanding young men.
