Coffee County sheriff’s authorities and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have arrested a 37-year-old man on murder and other felony charges following an incident Monday that forced the lockdowns of several area schools. At approximately 12:30 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2018, the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 report from a neighbor that a person had been shot at 118 Quincey Batten Loop, Lot 8, Douglas. Officers arrived at the location and found the body of 48-year-old Christopher Leonard Tyson, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. On May 1, 2018, more than 50 homeschooled students participated in an educational co op at Gen. Coffee State Park which focused on the study of reptiles. The students and parents were taught about reptiles by “Turtleman” Chris Adams and by “Snakeman” Robert Preston. Mr. Adams and Mr. Preston gave informative, entertaining talks to the group about various reptiles, and both brought live snakes to show as well as an iguana, alligator skull, turtle shells, preserved hybrid snakes and a preserved baby alligator. For the second time in two years a team had to come from the losers bracket to capture the GCAA softball tournament. This year the South Georgia State College Lady Hawks are the 2018 GCAA/Region 17 champions and are going to the NJCAA national championship tournament. The Hawks defeated the third seeded Lady Chargers 13-4 in a tournament that went all the way to the championship “IF” game to determine the champion.
