A multitude of friends, family, city and county officials joined by the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce gathered to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of NPR South, LLC owned by Nicole P. Ricketson. Nicole shared her appreciation and gratitude to everyone that had a part in helping her along the way to grow her business from its conception during her 2012 senior year of high school in the co-op program to the expansion it is today offering material hauling, road striping, tax preparation and bookkeeping. Ben Evans, Coffee County Gin, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. He spoke about cotton production, the cotton gin and the various products and commodities that are produced from cotton and its byproducts. The Kiwanis Club members enjoyed and appreciated his presentation.
Blondale Thomas (Media Relations/Event Coordinator) and Jercandyia Holmes (Information Specialist) attended the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s 2018 Regional Visitor Information Center Conference (RVIC) with over 80 state tourism professionals in Statesboro, Georgia, April 18-20, 2018. Douglas’ Regional Visitor Information Center is located inside the Ashley-Slater House. To remain a Georgia certified RVIC, the center’s representatives must attend mandatory training which includes attending the RVIC Conference, training with a State Visitor Information Center and attendance at a sister Center meeting, as well as optional training throughout the year. On Saturday, April 28, 2018, volunteers with the City of Douglas, ESG Operations and South Georgia State College helped clean up the South Gaskin Avenue and Pinecrest Drive area of Douglas. Approximately 20 volunteers helped collect over 20 bags of trash as well as other large items. Afterwards, South Georgia State College and ESG Operations provided the volunteers with a lite lunch. Special thanks to South Georgia State College and ESG Operations and the volunteers to took park in the cleanup.
The Mayor’s Youth Council attended the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (A.C.C.G.) Youth Caucus in Savannah on April 27–29, 2018. The youth council experienced great leadership training and networking with other youth from various counties across Georgia. County Commissioner Jimmy Kitchens and County Administrator Wesley Vickers were present at the ACCG Annual Convention and welcomed the youth council when they arrived on Friday. Coffee Regional Medical Center (CRMC) has named Aristotle Cochon, MD as their new chief medical officer. Dr. Cochon will provide medical expertise and leadership to his peers, ensuring the continual delivery of quality healthcare in his new role as chief medical officer. On April 25, 2018, West Green Elementary first grade students went on a field trip the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island. The students were able to learn about the danger of marine debris through watching a puppet show. Students also experienced being able to see how trash, hooks, and ships put sea turtle lives in danger. They were able to see the injured turtles that live at the Sea Turtle Center and learn how they are taken care of so that the turtles can one day return to their home.
