Numerous reports of drag racing in the city of Douglas are being reported to the Douglas Police Department. Several individuals are meeting to drag race their vehicles on public streets throughout the city. Drag racing is a violation of law and could have serious consequences to include incarceration, fines, possible license suspension, and increased insurance costs. Drag racing is not a felony in Georgia, however, high consideration should be held for the concern of the possibility of accidents, road and property damage, and loss of life or injuries from an accident. The new Douglas perimeter road overpass near Iron Road is expected to open to traffic next week, ending wait times and potential conflicts between motorists and trains. Traffic between Baker Highway and Ward Street will shift to new lanes to align with the overpass. Guardrails have been installed and striping of the bridge and approach lanes is under way. The contractor expects to open the bridge to traffic Tuesday, provided favorable weather continues for completion of the finishing touches. The Wiregrass Foundation North was the recipient of a $5,000 check from Wal-Mart Foundation Community Grant Program. Dr. Tina K. Anderson, President of Wiregrass along with Rodney Baggett, Commercial Truck Driving Instructor accepted the check on behalf of the college. The funds presented will be used to support the Commercial Truck Driving Program. The Commercial Truck Driving program at Wiregrass is a ten-week course with both day and night classes. The South Georgia State College (SGSC) Hawks baseball team continues to hold their second place position in the GCAA standings after a four-game sweep of Andrew College last week. They now stand at 31-14 overall and 17-6 in conference play. Satilla Riverkeeper and 19 volunteers cleaned up the Ava Lightsey Landing on the Satilla River in Atkinson on Saturday, April 14. Volunteers removed approximately 30 large garbage bags of litter from around the landing. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College President Dr. Tina K. Anderson is pleased to announce the Accreditation of the Associates of Science in Nursing (ASN – RN) program by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The college began in 2012 when the application for the ASN program through the Georgia Board of Nursing was made. In January of 2014, the first ASN class began.
