The Wiregrass Foundation North was the recipient of a $5,000 check from Wal-Mart Foundation Community Grant Program. Dr. Tina K. Anderson, President of Wiregrass along with Rodney Baggett, Commercial Truck Driving Instructor accepted the check on behalf of the college. The funds presented will be used to support the Commercial Truck Driving Program. The Commercial Truck Driving program at Wiregrass is a ten-week course with both day and night classes. The Commercial Truck Driving Certificate program is a sequence of courses designed to prepare students for their career. Mrs. Curtis was selected by her peers to receive this honor in recognition of her outstanding service to Eastside Elementary School and her profession. The South Georgia State College (SGSC) Hawks baseball team continues to hold their second place position in the GCAA standings after a four-game sweep of Andrew College last week. They now stand at 31-14 overall and 17-6 in conference play. The Hawks scored ten runs in the third inning on their way to a 12-5 victory over Andrew College on Tuesday, April 10th at Crider Field on the Douglas Campus. Satilla Riverkeeper and 19 volunteers cleaned up the Ava Lightsey Landing on the Satilla River in Atkinson on Saturday, April 14. Volunteers removed approximately 30 large garbage bags of litter from around the landing. This cleanup was part of a larger, coordinated cleanup week and trash awareness campaign that Waterkeeper Organizations and Affiliates across 20+ Gulf and South Atlantic states are taking part in for Earth Week. “Unlike at some of our other cleanup sites, most of the trash that volunteers picked up seemed to be the result of careless (or deliberate) littering rather than illegal dumping,” says Satilla Riverkeeper,…

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College President Dr. Tina K. Anderson is pleased to announce the Accreditation of the Associates of Science in Nursing (ASN – RN) program by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The college began in 2012 when the application for the ASN program through the Georgia Board of Nursing was made. In January of 2014, the first ASN class began. Recently, the program was recognized as number four in the state among colleges. Monday evening, April 16, just before 10:30 p.m., an armed man entered Dairy Queen on N. Pierce St. in Alma yielding a handgun and demanding money. While pointing the weapon at employees and ordering them around, the gunman fired one shot inside the kitchen. The gunman then fled the scene. No one was injured and no money was taken. Officers recovered a shell casing and the the bullet which penetrated a trashcan. The suspect was a black male of average height and weight. If anyone has any information concerning this attempted robbery, please contact the Alma Police Department at 912-632-8751.
