The City of Douglas announces plans for hosting a variety of events in celebration of Georgia Cities Week, April 23 through April 28, 2018. Monday evening, April 16, just before 10:30 p.m., an armed man entered Dairy Queen on N. Pierce St. in Alma yielding a handgun and demanding money. While pointing the weapon at employees and ordering them around, the gunman fired one shot inside the kitchen. The gunman then fled the scene. No one was injured and no money was taken. Officers recovered a shell casing and the the bullet which penetrated a trashcan. The suspect was a black male of average height and weight. The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council traveled to Atlanta on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 to visit the State Capitol and meet with legislators. While at the capitol, the group met with State Representative Dominic LaRiccia of District 169 (Coffee County) and Representative John Corbett of District 174 (Lowndes County). Representative LaRiccia and Representative Corbett gave the group a tour of their offices, capital building, monuments located on the grounds and treated the group to lunch. The City Of Douglas Fire Department received a $3,500 fire prevention grant from FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers. FM Global representatives presented the grant award to Douglas Fire Chief Larry Wilson on March 21, 2018. Douglas Fire Department has purchased I-Pads to track fire information accurately within the department. Monday morning, April 9, APD arrested Natasha Rea Peterson, 32 of Alma, for outstanding warrants in Douglas, GA, and Hinesville, GA. Peterson’s arrest followed APD assisting another agency while searching for another wanted fugitive. Monday afternoon, April 9, APD arrested Robert Faulk, 51 of Alma, for battery-family violence and cruelty to children-3rd degree. Faulk’s arrest followed a domestic dispute at Flash Foods. Afterward, APD’s Crime Suppression Unit stopped a vehicle in the 300 block of E. 6th St. for a seatbelt violation. The Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit arrested two individuals on methamphetamine and other drug-related charges earlier this week following a traffic stop just south of Douglas. K-9 officers initiated the stop around 2:30 p.m., April 11, 2018, on U.S. 441 South in the area of Harvey Vickers Road after the vehicle failed to maintain its lane of travel.
