On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, Wynetta Bolder (Douglas City Clerk/Customer Service Director), was the guest speaker at the Douglas Lions Club meeting. Mrs. Bolder presented to the club information about two youth initiatives with the City of Douglas: Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council and Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court. The City of Douglas is currently reviewing its policy regarding Food Trucks. While the policy is under review, the City is implementing a temporary pilot program for mobile food service in the Main Street district or downtown district. Businesses interested in the mobile food service program, are encouraged to participate in the pilot program. Criteria for the food truck operation are as follows: documentation of the necessary approvals from Georgia Dept. of Health Inspections and Permits or any agency documentation necessary to provide food service, possess a current City of Douglas business license, collect and remit Hospitality taxes as all other food service businesses, possess proof…
Alexandra Cardiel and Zac Elz of the Kappa Sigma chapter at South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Douglas campus each received a prestigious regional award at the Georgia Region Conference on March 23 – 24, 2018. The event was held at Atlanta Metropolitan State College. The Georgia Region Sarah Anne Staples award was given to Alexandra Cardiel. Sarah Anne Staples was a driving force for Georgia’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) organization. For over 35 years, she served as the advisor for Andrew College’s chapter. At the City Commission meeting held on Monday, March 26, 2018, the Mayor and Commission recognized Douglas Fire Department’s newest certified Firefighter. Jonathan Wright graduated from the Georgia Fire Academy on March 2, 2018. Firefighter Wright completed an eight week/345 hour Basic Firefighter Training course and graduated as a Georgia Certified Firefighter, National Pro-Board Certified Firefighter 1, and a National Pro-Board Certified Hazardous Materials Operations Level Firefighter. Firefighter Wright has worked hard to obtain these certifications and is now a valued member of Shift A at the Douglas Fire Department.
Coffee County deputies have arrested Kenneth McCrimmon, 63, on murder charges after an autopsy revealed that foul play was involved in the death of his wife, Jennifer McCrimmon, who was found dead on Dec. 26, 2017. On Dec. 26, 2017, at 7:48 a.m., Coffee County deputies were dispatched to 1168 Truelove Road in reference to a possible deceased person. Upon arrival at the location, Kenneth Wayne McCrimmon told deputies that he had found his wife, Jennifer McCrimmon, lying in the floor not breathing and cold to the touch. City of Douglas/Coffee County Land Bank Authority committee members and city officials traveled to Thomasville on Thursday, March 22, 2018. The purpose of the trip was to see how the Thomasville-Thomas County Land Bank Authority functions and how they utilize funding for projects. While in Thomasville, the group also toured the Main Street District and Thomasville Main Street Manager, April Norton, shared some of their successful projects for downtown.
The Nature Conservancy will hold its annual Broxton Rocks Easter Open House on Sunday, April 1 from 12:30–4:30 p.m. This annual event brings approximately 100-200 visitors to Coffee County.
