Once again, the South Georgia State College swim teams are among the best in the country. The teams notched two more national runner-up awards at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) swim meet held in Fort Pierce, Fla., last week. SGSC women’s team earned their third consecutive second place finish in the nation while the men repeated their runner-up spot from 2016. A 37-year-old Coffee County man has been charged with aggravated assault after beating his wife with a small wooden bench, causing multiple injuries. Deputies responded to a residence off Cumorah Cemetery Rd. around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, March 10, in reference to a domestic dispute that had occurred at another location. The victim stated her husband, identified as Matthew Gene Cauley, had awakened her around 2 a.m. and began arguing. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College will be accepting new student applications for Summer Semester on Free Application Day, March 22. Any new student who applies in person on this day will have the application fee waived. Free Application Day will be held on the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus, Coffee Campus, Cook County WDC Campus, Moody AFB Extended Campus, and the Valdosta Campus from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Students have two choices for earning summer college credits at Wiregrass. Earlier this week, a convenience store in Douglas sold a Georgia Lottery Jumbo Jumbo Bucks ticket worth $500,000. The ticket was purchased at Baker Express, located at 1436 Baker Highway West. The lucky winner claimed the prize Thursday at the Georgia Lottery’s Tifton District Office. The winner, a female, has requested that her name be witheld from publication. Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $19.2 billion to the state of Georgia for education. Regular compliance checks of local registered sex offenders conducted by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office resulted in two more arrests Thursday. Fontaine Jabar Sears, 39, registered his residency in Coffee County on Jan. 18, 2018 after being released from prison the day prior. At the time, he was registered as “homeless” and informed to keep the sheriff’s office updated regularly as to where he would be staying. The sheriff’s office had not heard from Sears since that time. All registered sex offenders are also required to inform the sheriff’s office of their place of employment. The leadership of the Douglas-Coffee County Economic Development Authority(EDA) recently launched a nationwide search for a president/chief executive officer to serve as the lead business location marketer for the community.
