The South Georgia State College Hawks were held to eight points in the final 5:12, and the Gordon State Highlanders spoiled Sophomore Day by escaping with a 64-61 win Saturday afternoon. It was the regular season finale for both teams. On Monday, Feb. 26, the Mayor and Commission recognized several youth in the community who are outstanding in several different areas. Mayor Pro Tem Kentaiwon Durham and the City Commission recognized Sedrick Williams for his hardwork and sacrifice while being great caregiver to his mother who has Lou Gehrigs disease. McIver, Willie Spence, Justin Strickland, Micheal Woods, Evie Woodward, Kimberly Wright and they were chaperoned by Mrs. Chalanda Woods. The Arrive Alive Tour® from UNITE will visit South Georgia State College’s Waycross Campus on Monday, March 5, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. UNITE’s Arrive Alive Tour® program uses a high-tech simulator, impact video, and a number of other resources to educate the public about the dangers of intoxicated driving. The simulator allows participants to experience the potential consequences of impaired driving in a controlled environment. Nearly one-third of all traffic deaths involve alcohol-impaired drivers. On Wednesday, Feb. 21 and Thursday, Feb. 22, the City of Douglas and community members welcomed a 10 member Georgia Tourism Product Development (TPD) Team to Douglas for a roundtable lunch and discussion of Douglas and Coffee County’s tourism assets focusing on local history, community leadership, education, sports/recreation, downtown, culinary, agriculture/nature and retail tourism. A 16-year-old male juvenile will face one charge of dissemination of information relating to terroristic threats following an incident that occurred Thursday. Coffee County sheriff’s authorities received numerous reports of a video posted to social media depicting an incident at Coffee High School where several individuals were recorded making comments regarding school shootings and referring to an individual in the video as “school shooter.” The video was shared on social media by the 16-year-old, which caused some concern in the community and set off an investigation by the sheriff’s office. On Jan. 28, the Alma Police Department conducted a traffic stop on W. 12th St for an equipment violation. James Virgil Braddock, 37 of Waycross, was arrested for an active parole warrant. On Feb. 5, APD’s Crime Suppression Unit conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle occupied by Dawson King, 18 of Alma. King was arrested for outstanding warrants out of Bacon County. On Feb. 6, APD’s Crime Suppression Unit arrested Melissa Denise Lovejoy, 33 of Alma, for theft by taking following a theft on Feb. 3rd which occurred at Verizon Wireless. Father John Commins, St. Andrews Anglican Church, Chaplain for the Coffee High Baseball team, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, 27, 2018, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. He spoke on behalf of Coach Sy Jones of the Coffee High Baseball team. He discussed Sy Jones’ background as a coach. He also talked about the coaching staff. The Kiwanis Club members enjoyed and appreciated his presentation.
Michael “Bull” Brown of the Boys and Girls Club of Coffee County Region was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at the Flyin Cowboy Restaurant. He spoke about his role as the new director of the Boys and Girls Club of the Coffee County Region. He discussed what the club has to offer the children in the community for after school programming. He also discussed upcoming plans for the spring and summer and what they have done previously. The Kiwanis club members enjoyed and appreciated his presentation.
