Over the past few weeks, 7th grade self-contained has been studying vertebrates and how they are identified. Students have learned the various characteristics to distinguish between the different groups of vertebrates. Thanks to Mr. Robert Preston, the subject of vertebrates was brought to life by allowing the students to view and interact with two snakes and one lizard: a ball python, a rainbow boa, and a savannah monitor. Students answered comprehensive questions identifying the animals as reptiles and classifying them as vertebrates. On Friday, Feb. 16, several citizens and community leaders attended the Douglas Visitor Information Center’s Camellia Garden “Georgia Camellia Trail” listing and bench dedication. The historic camellia garden is one of the gardens listed on Georgia’s Camellia Trail and has 11 camellias for visitors to enjoy during the winter season. The Class of 1988 honored longtime camellia enthusiast Clayton Mathis posthumously with a one of kind bench that was placed in the garden. The South Georgia State College (SGSC) Hawks made the long road trip to Allendale, South Carolina, to take on the USC-Salkehatchie Indians. The double-header led to two victories for the Hawks as they defeated the Indians by a score of 6-2 in the first game of the afternoon and 2-1 in the final game.
