The SGSC Academic Quiz Teams competed in the 2018 National Academic Quiz Team (NAQT) Sectionals Playoffs over the weekend of Jan. 20. For the first time in almost a decade, SGSC had enough members to send two teams to the competition. The SGSC ‘A’ team finished at 4-5, while the ‘B’ team went 1-8. Karla Chaney, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2018, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. She spoke about the Friends of General Coffee State Park which is a chapter of the Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites. The South Georgia State College Hawks opened its 2018 season with a doubleheader loss to Santa Fe at Crider Field on Saturday, Jan. 27. The first game of the day turned into a pitcher’s duel as the Hawks fell to Santa Fe with a score of 3 – 2. Both teams were strong on the mound, but Santa Fe’s hitting led them to the victory. Recently, amid concerns on the use of golf carts on the streets and property, the Douglas City Commission passed a new ordinance pertaining to golf carts within the city limits of Douglas. Effective Jan. 8, 2018, all golf carts must be registered through the City of Douglas Marshal’s Office. Once registered, owners will receive a decal that must be affixed to the cart for its use on a city street.
