Mrs. Louise McDuffie Atkinson, age 89, of Douglas, Ga, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, in Douglas, Ga., Mrs. Atkinson was born on December 18, 1927, in Sumterville, Florida, to the late Melch D. McDuffie and Eunie Della Smith McDuffie. Savannah-based Enmarket Stations, Inc. is boosting its convenience store reach with a 35-store deal that will bring the company total to 90 operating stores in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. The 54th Annual Festival of Lights Christmas Parade was held on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017. The Parade Marshal, Ms. Sharnae Pegues, led the annual night-time parade that began at 6 p.m. The parade had over 60 entries that were categorized into 5 divisions: Church, Small Business, Large Business, Education and Clubs/Individuals/Organizations. South Georgia State College’s swim teams traveled to Savannah last weekend to participate in the 15th annual SCAD Invitational swim meet against fifteen other four-year schools and had another great showing in the pool. “This is the fastest and biggest meet that we will go to all year,” commented Coach CM Jenkins. “The fast pool and elevated level of competition created an environment for fast times and our kids responded well.” The SGSC swimmers broke five school records at the meet and cut time in all four relays in which they participated. The City of Douglas Police Department and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department, jointly, will be entering the sixth year of receiving the Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (H.E.A.T) Grant through the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. This year’s approved application amount is $117,105.70. The H.E.A.T. program is a multi-jurisdictional program with one officer, Tommy Groll, with the Douglas Police Department, and one officer, Jacob Adams, with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department. Both H.E.A.T. Unit officers have the authority to patrol both the city and county. Wednesday morning, November 29, the Alma Police Department responded to the 100 block of E. 19th St to a burglary in progress. APD’S Crime Suppression Unit arrested James D. Cater, 66 of Alma, for burglary in the first degree. Later in the evening of the 29, APD’s Crime Suppression Unit arrested Phillip Jacob Clements, 37 of Hazlehurst, for DUI and theft by deception.
