Veronica Crockett, Director and Kesha Taylor, Assistant Director of E-911 were the speakers at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting of Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. They spoke about E-911 and gave an informative talk about what they do. The Kiwanis club members enjoyed and appreciated their presentation.
The City of Douglas along with other cities throughout the state of Georgia did their part to bring the Christmas spirit to patients at behavioral health hospitals this year. On Dec. 6, 2017, the Douglas Fire Department and officials from the City of Douglas delivered a check in the amount of $891.76 to Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. The Satilla Rural Electric Membership Corporation through its Round Up program has made another wonderful gift to Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Foundation North. Reba Quirk, president of the Memorial Satilla Health (MSH) Auxiliary, made a significant contribution recently on behalf of the organization to the Memorial Satilla Health Auxiliary Endowment Scholarship at South Georgia State College (SGSC). The scholarship was established in 1983 and is awarded to SGSC students who are majoring in nursing. Accepting the check was SGSC President Dr. Ingrid Thompson-Sellers. Dr. Sellers thanked Quirk and the MSH Auxiliary for the organization’s continued investment in SGSC nursing students.

The Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting for the Love In Action (LIA) Foundation with founders, Derrick and Chandra Green, and several board members, donors, volunteers, family and friends attending. LIA Foundation is a non-profit organization (501c3) whose mission is to target issues of poverty, hunger, education and childcare in the Coffee County area by providing a food pantry, after-school and summer meals, senior meals on wheels, and a backpack feeding program. A man who walked off from a Coffee County Jail work detail Friday is back behind bars following a short-lived escape plan hatched with the assistance of his girlfriend. 50-year-old Donald Dewayne Davis had been incarcerated at the jail since July 2017, on multiple drug charges and a probation violation. He had been placed on a work crew at the courthouse, where he was assigned to painting the visiting judge’s office last Friday. The South Georgia State College Hawks took advantage of strong shooting from Luke Lawson Friday night during the Chick-fil-A Classic to pull away from Arlington Country Day Post Graduate Academy 76-55.
