By Jacie McSwain The George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC) recently had a Scholastic Book Fair. Every student was given a $10 certificate to buy whatever book they would like to read. The certificates were made possible by last years Bikers for Books fundraiser held by last year’s freshman class and parent group. Last April the Bikers for Books race was held for runners, walkers, bikers and cyclists who ran, walked, road a motorcycle or pedaled a bike. JoAnne Lewis and Luke Morgan were honored with state economic development awards at the annual GEDA (Georgia Economic Developers Association) Awards luncheon in Atlanta on Monday, Nov. 13. Lewis received the Rip Wiley Award for Professional Excellence and Morgan was named the 2017 Volunteer of the Year. The Rip Wiley Award for Professional Excellence recognizes a GEDA member with at least 10 years of economic development experience for professionalism, honor, integrity, leadership, hard work and contributions to the profession. On Friday, Nov. 17, the Coffee High Trojans will continue in the state football playoffs, traveling to Augusta, Georgia to play Evans High School. There is also a previously scheduled NJROTC competition in Jacksonville, Florida and a swim meet in Albany, Georgia on Friday. Due to the need for buses and drivers used in transporting students to these events, the Coffee County Schools will observe an early release on Friday, November 17. The South Georgia State College Hawks took advantage of clutch shooting in the second half Saturday afternoon to pull away from the USC-Salkehatchie Indians for a 78-65 win. Citizens in Douglas and Coffee County are invited to start a season of giving by participating in the Coffee County Community Toy Drive. The City of Douglas, along with many local community agencies, is hosting a Community Toy Drive for boys and girls ages 12 and under.
