Braswell South Georgia State College (SGSC) recently welcomed Georgia Southern University (GSU) Center for Wildlife Education’s (CWE) Birds-of-Prey show in an event hosted by South Georgia State’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Center. The event drew large crowds that included students, alumni, current and retired employees, and members of the community, with 200 audience members on the Douglas campus and 60 in Waycross. Dr. Larry Hutchinson and Wycliffe Stewart, were the speakers at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting of Tuesday, November 7 2017, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Dr. Hutchinson explained what a chiropractor does and the training they receive that is the equivalent of a medical doctor. Wiregrass Georgia Tech is excited to share the expansion of programs on various campuses and the addition of programs to the HOPE Career Grant List for Spring Semester 2018. Students enrolling for Spring Semester classes beginning January 9, 2018, will have more options to choose from and can save money on their college expenses if they enroll in one of the programs added to the Governor’s HOPE Career Grant List. The new South Georgia State College (SGSC)-wrapped bus is creating quite a stir, not to mention a scholarship donation from one of its most staunch supporters, Mr. Jerry Richardson. Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, members from Coffee Middle School FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) volunteered their time to work and celebrate students with special needs. This event, which is named after Kayla Davis, a former special needs student in the Coffee County School System, is set aside each year to honor her memory and to offer students with special needs the opportunity to a day of fun-filled fall festival events. As with national and state trends, South Georgia State College (SGSC) continues to experience changes in various sectors of enrollment. While overall enrollment landed at 2,540, roughly the same as last year, there are several positive indicators for the college. Online classes continue to grow as students desire more flexibility and convenience to meet their unique schedules and individual situations. As a result, SGSC saw fully online enrollment double over last fall. South Georgia State College men’s and women’s swim teams continued their winning ways while hosting the eighth annual South Georgia State College Invitational. Both teams won the tri-meet held in Douglas on Saturday. Both the men and women move to 4-0 on the season by defeating Thomas University and LaGrange College. The Hawks’ women scored 274 points to Thomas’ 148 and the men amassed 264 points to second place Thomas’ 216. LaGrange was third on both sides of the meet. Coffee County sheriff’s authorities have arrested a 47-year-old Douglas man on aggravated assault and other charges following a shooting that occurred at a local residence Sunday night. Deputies responded to a home off Whippoorwill Road around 10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017 in reference to a person who had been shot. The 76-year-old male victim was found lying on the floor in the residence with a severe gunshot wound to his hand. Cub Scout Pack 859, chartered by Aldersgate Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church in Douglas, Ga participated in Cub Family Weekend at Camp Patten in Lakeland, Ga. The Avengers themed camping weekend, organized by the South Georgia Council, was filled with different types of adventures, including, campfires, obstacle courses, archery, BB gun target practice, chapel and many more. Our staff has been very busy working with about 75 Cloverleaf 4-H members trying to help them get their speeches and posters ready for competition. Cloverleaf DPA is open to students in fourth through sixth grades. DPA is a 4-H competition where a student selects a project area, narrows down their subject, researches it, organizes their information, and writes a speech.
