Mrs. Maureen Peterson Solomon, age 87, of Tifton, GA, formerly of Broxton, passed away early Saturday morning, September 2, 2017 at her residence following an extended illness. She was born June 1, 1930 in Telfair County to Lola Mae Briley. After the death of her mother, she was adopted by Alfred and Lillie Peterson who raised her. Mrs. Ingrid Sonnenberg McKinnon, age 79, of Douglas, passed away early Wednesday morning, August 30, 2017, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, GA following a short illness. August 25, 2017 marked the beginning of a new era for South Georgia State College. An overflow crowd was on hand to celebrate and cut the ribbon, opening the recently completed renovations of Davis Hall, one of the college’s three original buildings on the Douglas Campus, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Heather Butler, City of Douglas Finance Accountant, has earned Local Finance Officer Certification in the second quarter of 2017 through the Carl Vinson Institute of Government’s financial management training program. Butler was recognized with Level IIcertification for pursuing professional development in governmental finance, accounting, budgeting, and more. Level II certification requires finance officers to participate in nearly 200 hours of instruction about the intricacies of government budgeting, purchasing, accounting, and other public finance topics. On Tuesday, August 29, Maribel Gonzalez was sworn in as an officer for the South Georgia State College (SGSC) Police Department. The swearing in ceremony was presided over by Judge Beverly Johns of the Probate Court of Coffee County. Gonzalez, born in Mexico, has been living in Georgia most of her life and currently resides in Waycross, Ga. Prior to joining SGSC’s Police Department, Gonzalez worked for the Ware County Sheriff’s Department and the Homerville Police Department. The new competitive Math Club is busy preparing for their upcoming competition in Macon, GA. Fourth and fifth-grade students have been working hard after school to strengthen computational fluency and problem-solving skills.
