South Georgia State College’s STEM Center will be holding STEM Fest 2017 Thursday, August 17 on the Douglas Campus. STEM Fest 2017 will celebrate space science in preparation for the upcoming total solar eclipse. STEM Fest will include a traveling planetarium, moon bounce, lab simulation, rocket launching, and more! Student officers from the Coffee Middle School FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Chapter attended S.L.O.T.S. (Summer Leadership & Officer Training Summit) July 18, 2017. The summit was held at Crisp County High School in Cordele, Ga. Students participated in sessions to prepare them for their duties and responsibilities in their local chapter. Chapter officers also worked with advisers and other chapters from around the state to develop or refine a program of work for the new school year. Tommy Leon Cooper, Sr., age 72, of Broxton, Ga. passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Pruitt Health following an extended illness. Hortense Reaves Day, age 97, of Douglas, Ga. passed away on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at her residence following an extended illness. The City of Douglas has contacted the Department of Transportation for an update in regards to the double culvert construction and detour that began on June 12, 2017. According to D.O.T., the installation of the culverts at the intersection of Gaskin Avenue and the Perimeter Road (U.S. 221/SR 135) is complete. Construction of new culverts was ,necessary to accommodate the widening of the perimeter road and the stream that runs underneath Gaskin Avenue. The culvert construction area still needs to be paved. Weather permitting, Gaskin Avenue may reopen by Friday, August 11. Should paving take longer, the detour may be…

The Airbase Preservation and Development Committee will host its first National Aviation Day Fly-In on Saturday, August 19, 2017 from 10 am – 2 pm at the Douglas Municipal Gene Chambers Airport located at 3 Airport Circle. “Everyone is encouraged to attend and to come out and learn about preservation efforts of this historic WWII Airbase,” says Dr. Carl McDonald, APDC Chairman. RYLA is an outreach of Rotary International where high school juniors and seniors are selected by their local Rotary Clubs to participate in a leadership retreat.
