Due to a scheduled building demolition located in the downtown area at 106 South Madison Avenue, a portion of South Madison Avenue between Ashley Street (SR 32 East) and Ward Street (SR 32 West), will be temporarily closed on Saturday, August 26, 2017, through Sunday, August 27, 2017. A ribbon cutting to celebrate the renovation of Davis Hall on the Douglas Campus of South Georgia State College will be held on Friday, August 25, at 9:30 a.m. Davis Hall, built in 1906, was one of the original three buildings of what was then an A&M school. Originally, Davis Hall served as a dormitory to students, with its primary purpose now as classroom space. The renovation brings a variety of technology and layout changes to the space to enhance the teaching and learning experiences for SGSC students as well as increased utility efficiencies for the institution. Evie campaigned at the Georgia 4-H State Council meeting at Rock Eagle 4-H Center on June 23-25. Five candidates are elected, one as president, one as vice-president, and three as state representatives. At the time of announcement, they do not know which office they hold. On Saturday, August 12, 2017, a large group gathered with the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of Saim Minit Mart located at 6582 Highway 32 West in Douglas. Joining Chamber Board Chairman Stanley Lott, President Andrea Taylor and Director Lisa Hodge were Mayor Tony Paulk, Pastor Joey Copeland and a host of customers, family and friends. Mr. Benjamin Franklin Purvis, age 92, of Ambrose, GA passed away early Thursday morning, August 10, 2017, at Pruitt Nursing Home in Ocilla, GA. following an extended illness. Mr. Purvis was born in Irwin County on April 7, 1925 to the late Richard Purvis and the late Nancy Joyce Purvis. Survivors include: several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
