Weeknight lane closures on state Route 135/perimeter road are scheduled to begin Monday as a Georgia Department of Transportation contractor begins milling and resurfacing. Drivers should expect lane closures from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday. Work locations will vary, but will occur between U.S. 441 and SR 32. This work is expected to take about two months to complete. Milling, removal of the top level of asphalt, and resurfacing is being done to level the main road before widening. One of Douglas’ own is returning home with honors, medical degrees and a family. When Josh Vickers graduated from Citizens Christian Academy just over a decade ago he left Douglas to attend the University of Georgia. From there he went on to graduate from University of Florida College of Medicine and is now completing a fellowship at the prestigious Emory University Department of Orthopedics in Atlanta. Mrs. Margaret Rose Moore Boone, age 77, of Pearson, GA passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Sunday afternoon, July 23, 2017 at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Boone was born August 27, 1939 to the late Elias Moore and the late Rhoda Fussell Moore. The Mayor and City Commission presented Mrs. Robbie Ingram and the Roper family with the award from Georgia Municipal Association naming the late Johnnie Lee Roper, Jr. to the GMA Hall of Fame.

Chris Rozier and Dean Willard of the Sheriff’s Department along with their drug dog gave the program at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, July 25 at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Officer Rozier spoke about the drug problem in Coffee County and the K-9 unit. He and Officer Willard with their drug dog demonstrated how a K-9 unit works to find drugs. The Kiwanis club members enjoyed and appreciated their presentation.

On September 5, 2017, the City of Douglas Public Information Department will begin to accept registrations for the 54th Annual Festival of Lights Christmas Parade.
