Coffee County sheriff’s detectives have arrested a 37-year-old Douglas man following a burglary early Sunday morning at a local business. Deputies responded to Aden’s Minit Market, 1214 U.S. Hwy. 221 N., around 3:30 a.m., June 25, in reference to an alarm going off at the location. They discovered someone had gained entry into the store by removing plywood panels from the side of the building where a bathroom addition had been constructed. Dr. Kimberly Hunt, assistant professor of biology and genetics at South Georgia State College, was selected as a 2017 Governor’s Teaching Fellow. As one of 16 faculty members from institutions of higher education across the state, Dr. Hunt was selected after a highly competitive application and selection process. Hunt earned an associate of science degree from Chipola College; a bachelor of science in botany and a minor in plant molecular and cellular biology from the University of Florida; and a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Georgia. Two people were jailed by Coffee County deputies on forgery charges Tuesday after passing counterfeit $100 bills at a local convenience store. Deputies responded to Jet Foods, 9231 Ga. Hwy. 32 W., just prior to 2 p.m., June 27, in reference to counterfeit money. The complainant stated that two individuals, identified as 22-year-old William Scarborough and 36-year-old Tomie Karol Inman, both of Douglas, had passed the bills while making purchases the previous Friday. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College students attended the 53rd Annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference held in Louisville, KY on June 19-23. More than 6,000 students competed in 100 different trade, technical, and leadership fields. Students worked against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations such as electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, medical assisting and culinary arts. A 30-year-old Statesboro man faces methamphetamine charges after Coffee County drug agents discovered he was concealing the drug inside a drink cup during a traffic stop earlier this week. Just after 2 p.m., June 25, a Coffee County K-9 deputy conducted a traffic stop on a gold Buick Century on U.S. Hwy. 221 N. after observing the passenger, identified as Warren Preston-Chandler Anderson, not wearing a seat belt. While attempting to obtain Anderson’s identification, the officer observed the suspect take a sip from a Styrofoam cup that appeared to contain drugs. On June 12, 2017, at the regular City Commission meeting, the Mayor and Commission moved forward with a resolution to establish a City Marshal’s office. Due to changes in state laws and regulation, the City Marshal’s Office will be established as its own agency/department. Revisions to the Marshal/Code Enforcement Office City Ordinance were made in October 2007 which mandated the Marshal/Code Enforcement Officer be P.O.S.T. certified and have powers of arrest.
