Members of Team A from Lowndes High School captured first place in the annual Mathematics Tournament held recently on South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Waycross Campus. A total of 114 students from seven high schools – Brantley, Charlton, Georgia Christian, Lowndes, Pierce, Valdosta, and Ware – competed in the event. Students participated in individual and team competitions. The individual competition featured a 75-minute, 40-question multiple choice exam that covered topics in the high school curriculum – algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and calculus. South Georgia State College (SGSC) students Loren Mertz of Nahunta and Kelsey Smith of Douglas were named to the All-Georgia Academic Team, a program sponsored by two-year college presidents, the national honor society for two-year colleges Phi Theta Kappa, and community college state associations. Mertz and Smith are members of Phi Theta Kappa’s Kappa Sigma chapter on the Douglas Campus. A recognition luncheon was recently held in their honor in Atlanta at the Sloppy Floyd Building Empire Room. Colleges may nominate students from their campuses to the All-USA Academic Team. A man wanted by Coffee County law enforcement on drug and weapons charges was apprehended this week after evading capture since November. Detectives and K-9 officers with the Douglas – Coffee Drug Unit arrested 24-year-old Andre Cashmon Davis on Wednesday after spotting the suspect walking along Baker Highway. Davis was wanted on charges including possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. A Coffee County man was jailed on DUI and drug charges early Friday morning after authorities discovered him passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle in a ditch at a local convenience store. An officer with the Douglas – Coffee HEAT Unit was dispatched to Jet Foods, 2897 Highway 441 South, just after midnight. A state trooper joined the HEAT officer and, when they arrived, the vehicle was found parked in the ditch with the reverse lights on and engine still running. A man who attempted to swallow a quantity of marijuana and suspected methamphetamine during a traffic stop Friday afternoon was jailed on multiple drug charges. Coffee County deputies initiated the stop around 2:30 p.m. on a black Lincoln Navigator for a traffic violation. Deputies learned the vehicle was uninsured and detected the smell of marijuana from inside the SUV. The Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting for Coffee Regional Medical Center’s new Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbarics Center located across from CRMC at 304 Westside Drive. CRMC President Vicki Lewis, along with Dr. Romulo Navarro, provided an excellent overview of the specialized treatment available at the new center for chronic/non-healing wounds. During the hyperbaric treatment process, patients breathe 100 percent oxygen inside a pressurized chamber which provides a significant increase in the concentration of oxygen in the bloodstream and delivered to the wound site to promote healing. On the morning of March 31, 2017, the Alma Police Department responded to Parker Food Mart regarding counterfeit money. Officers were informed a white female entered the store on the previous evening and passed a counterfeit $50 bill. The lady has been identified as Dena Marie Fogle-Crider, 34 of Alma. On April 3, APD responded to Pineland Bank regarding counterfeit money. Officers were informed a black female, identified as Yakeatha Johnson, 37 of Alma, attempted to exchange a counterfeit $50 bill for a valid bill. The SGSC Academic Quiz Team recently competed at the 2017 Community College Championship Tournament in the two year schools division in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The team consisted of Hailey Williamson, co-captain, Hong “Rose” Nguyen, co-captain, Saadia Akram, and Alejandro Briceno. SGSC’s team, seeded 18th, finished with a record of three wins and eight losses, thus ending the season.
