Lexie Southerland, Journalism student at GWCFC Recently the George Washington Carver Freshman Campus’ (GWCFC) Journalism class visited South Georgia State College (SGSG). When arriving at the college the Journalism class was welcomed by Nikolaos Hutto. Hutto is currently a Business teacher and lead recruiter at SGSC. The City of Douglas and TransWaste are offering residential junk drop-off days once a month to help citizens get rid of the excess trash. The upcoming date will be Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the City Pole Yard located at Pearl Avenue from 8:00 am-12 noon. Remaining drop-off dates for 2017 are as follows: May 6, June 3, July 1, August 5, September 2, October 7, November 4, and December 2, 2017. Deadline Extended for Cloverleaf Day Camps Each summer, in addition to providing the traditional week of summer camp at one of the five 4-H camping facilities, we offer a few local day camps for Cloverleaf (4th-6th graders) 4-H members. This year, we are offering three activities for these students. The first one is called “Fun and Games” and will be held on Monday, June 5th. Hank Eugene Crews, age 44, of Nicholls, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017, at University of Florida Shands Hospital, in Jacksonville, FL from injuries received in an automobile accident. There were several special recognitions at the Coffee County Board of Education’s March 23rd School Board Meeting. Recognitions included three teams from Coffee High and several schools for their recent achievements. Under the direction of Coffee High School teacher Rodney Ragsdale, two groups have recently advanced to national and world competitions. The VEX robotics team, Team 1253, advanced to the World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky on April 18-22, 2017. This is the second time CHS robots have made it to the World Championships; the last time was 2012. There are 540 robots competing in this year’s tournament, nineteen of which are from Georgia.…

Friday evening, March 24, the Alma Police Department located a runaway juvenile from Nebraska during a vehicle stop at Flash Foods at the intersection of Highway 32 and U.S. 1. The juvenile was traveling with David A. Murcia Gouzalez, 18 of Omaha, Nebraska. Gouzalez was charged with several traffic violations, to include driving with a suspended driver’s license, and possession of methamphetamine. Alma police contacted the Division of Family and Children Services for assistance with returning the juvenile to her parents in Nebraska.
