Scott Gillis, Career Academy principal, was the speaker at the Feb. 7 Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. He spoke about his 28 years in the local school system and the Career Academy at Wiregrass Technical College. The Kiwanis club members enjoyed and appreciated his presentation.
South Georgia State College is set to host a Homecoming Weekend on Friday, Feb. 10, and Saturday, Feb. 11, with several events planned for alumni, student-athletes, and Hawk fans from the campus and community. The South Georgia State College Hawks baseball team defeated Tallahassee Community College (TCC) in their first home game of the season with a 5-4 decision. The Hawks were trailing by three until a big fifth inning driven by singles by Chandler Rogers and Cameron Coffey. Four runs came across the plate putting SGSC in the lead. TCC answered back with a single run in the top of the seventh to tie the score. JUNIOR/SENIOR DPA Coffee County 4-H members brought home 23 first, second, and third place awards and two Senior 4-H members will be advancing to the state competition in Atlanta in July. In addition, five Coffee County 4-H members were elected to help lead Southeast District 4-H this year. Coffee County was well represented at the annual Junior/Senior District Project Achievement (DPA) at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center January 27-29. These students had to begin by selecting a project. James David “Papa David” Johns, age 67, of Douglas, GA passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, in Brooksville, FL following a brief illness. Members of Coffee Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society recently served as pages in the Georgia House of Representatives. Rep. Dominic LaRiccia provided the students with lunch and gave them a tour of the Capitol. Students met Governor Nathan Deal and Secretary of State Brian Kemp, along with other Georgia representatives. Coffee Middle School hosted the Coffee County Annual Spelling Bee on January 26, 2017 and thanks all of the elementary schools and CMS for their participation. Congratulations to all of the winners.
